I am on the fence here. I like the early high level "free" diamonds but then I prefer a more timed release like past games. Whales will still buy stubs to pay to win but the more casual player is ok with earning the cards normally.
I still wish they would be less pay to win though. But that's my opinion

I'm much happier with 23 than 22. I liked 21 despite some of the problems, but 22 was painful and I actually stopped playing for about 2 months. This year I'm enjoying most of the cards I get to use right now, and I feel the game is playing tough and I like that. I agree the captain system is strange and I'm not sure I'll ever theme-team enough to take advantage, but that's not an issue for me -- I simply might avoid the option. Further, I'm pleased to report there are no issues with multiverse switching as my pack luck is still terrible, so thank goodness for that.

The reason I am ok with early 92, 97, and 99's is every year, I dislike having to say goodbye to the God Squad we all have at the end. I loved RF Cutch, the 99 J-Ram, Trout, etc. LS J-Ram has been terrible for me so far, lol.
I didn't mind the steady climb to God squads in past games, but it doesn't hurt to get really good cards this early either.
Something does seem off, though. I can't put a finger on it atm. I had early access, but am moving slowly. Maybe because I play other games? -

As an offline player mostly, this year is by far my favorite year.
As an offline player I can say it is not mine.

It has turned into a stub sink. As mentioned I need a quarter of a million stubs to rent three 99 overall Cardinal cards that basically expire on July 7th. I am sure that total will just keep going up as more Cardinal cards are released, with 99's for your favorite teams being released every season.
-
The doubled down on PXP missions by even making the Topps Now players each week have a program and PXP missions. Last night I had time to play one 9 inning Vs CPU game. But because of Weekly Wonder and Topps Now mission I felt I needed to remove a bunch of my preferred cards because I needed stats with right handed hitters, colorado pitchers and the Topps Now players. Despite beating the CPU handily and having the Topps Now players do very well I am only half way to their total PXP to finish that mission, which means another 9 inning game against the CPU using players I would prefer not to use.
And we'll get to do it all over again next week when new Weekly Wonders and Topps Now cards release. And lets not forget the drawn out chore that the POTM card programs were last year. We still have that to look forward to (Blech)
I just find myself asking why I am working on trying to get a massive (for me) amount of stubs to basically rent/buy players that the game doesn't want me to use because every program has missions to earn PXP with different group of players? This is not new. It was my biggest complaint last year as well, but as I have said they seem to have kicked it up a notch by having Topps now players also have missions.
When are you going to use that theme team if every program has you earning PXP or stats with players not on the theme team?

A valid point. Pxp missions have been annoying since their inception. I also can't get over the fact that I'm constantly having to play with a bunch of cards I don't want, and soon all the cards I did want to play with will be expired.
I forgot about the super drawn out monthly programs. I can imagine how bad they will be. These TAs are taking forever and a half, so I'm betting the monthly programs will be a significant time sink. However, atleast the lightning card will be a good active player we can use.

But chances are it will be a set card with an expiration of it's own.

For mostly offline players the cards expiring won't be as much of an issue. It does not affect all offline modes.
As for the TAs, I don't think the expectation should be to finish them within a couple of weeks of release. They are intended to be long programs.

It's still an issue. Maybe not as much of one as those who primarily play ranked but it is still an issue.
Sure we can just run the US conquest map or base mini seasons campaign over and over but every program starting with season 3 that introduces a new Conquest map will not be able to be done with those expired cards.
Lets say they introduce a level of Team Affinity every season. Come Season 3 you will probably not be able to use all of those players you are earning in team affinity Season 1 to grind PXP for season 3.
So yes, there are ways to use them if we are willing to stagnate and not progress the later season's programs

Ahh yes, again, I forgot—these cards all expire!

Yay!!! We all have 99s, how fun is this!?
(Fart noise) what a terrible decision. All incentive is gone. The live series collection has taken a back seat to praying for microtransactions.
Edit: to the trolls, I've been here longer than you. Enjoy the game when it's dead come June.
I wish there was a way we could down vote these posts.
