If he turns into a superstar this could be genius. Overpay for the first 3 years but once he’s arbitration eligible and the last 2 years of the contract they are getting a decent discount.

I like it when young players get paid, I think it's good for baseball. Many multi sport athletes shy away from professional baseball and opt for the NFL instead, partly because it can take a long time in baseball to establish yourself and secure your financial future. Which in my opinion is a shame, because I would love for these super athletes to maybe reverse the trend in coming years and opt for baseball more often instead. These type of contracts can help them push in that direction.

More teams are going to take the Braves approach of paying young players early to buy out their arbitration years and lock them up for 8+ years. Risks on both sides but the player is still in their prime when they hit free agency.

I think it gives the PIrates another benchmark for a Reynolds extension if they still go that route. This falls between the Sean Murphey and Matt Olsen contracts.

    They'll probably offer O'Neill $10m for 10 years. $3m guaranteed.

Good move for all parties. If he turns into a stat the club is getting a deal. In the meantime, the kid has enough money to take care of his family.

Still waiting to see the Mets do this with Alonso

I totally agree with you. Kyler Murray is a great example for this post
