I don’t hate moments, but they are a missed opportunity. Over the past few years, we’ve all seen consistent complaints: they’re repetitive, some “moments” are essentially full games, grinding moment after moment ultimately feels pointless, and the “moments” SDS has chosen are completely forgettable and unremarkable. I think this plan could fix most (if not all) of these problems.
We have 140+ years of historically noteworthy “moments” in MLB history, but we are only ever asked to recreate meaningless scenarios. Pitch one inning with some middle reliever and get a strikeout. Get 2 XBH with some slapwiener. Big deal.
For this idea to work properly, it would need to be a yearlong process that tallies points every time you complete a mission. A full year-long Moments Reward Path Program, I guess. But the hook is that it would branch out in two separate reward paths. A “Heroes” path and a “Villains” path.
Each moment would ask us to replay a BIG moment in baseball history. Mookie Wilson’s grounder in the 86 WS. Carlton Fisk’s walk-off in 75. The last inning of Don Larsen’s perfect game. You get the idea.
Before each moment starts, you have to choose if you want to recreate history or change it. If you recreate history, you get hero points. If you change it, you get villain points.
Example: It’s the 88 WS, and Kirk Gibson is hobbling up to the plate. If you choose to play for Hero points, you play as Kirk and you need to hit the HR in order to complete the mission. If you want to play for Villain points, you play as Eckersley and you need to strike him out.
I think it would only be fair to allow us to play each moment both times so we can get Hero AND Villain points. But it would be an interesting wrinkle if you could only do it once. So you would need to decide early in the year if you’re going for the ultimate end-game Hero reward (and a ton of hero henchman along the way) or if you want to spend the full game cycle rewriting history and working toward the Villian rewards.
The end-game Hero reward could be a 99 Griffey. The end-game Villain reward would be 99 Joey Votto.
I think this would fix most of our complaints about Moments:
1.) They're repetitive. Of course you'll still be hitting a lot of walk-offs and striking out a lot of dudes in the bottom of the 9th. But I think setting the moments throughout all of MLB history -- with different teams, players, uniforms, parks, etc -- could add to the variety a bit. And, I think this next point is important too...
2.) They're meaningless and not noteworthy. hitting a HR with Andrew Vaughn is, like, whatever. It's just a thing that happened in a game that no one cares about. Hitting Mazeroski's walk-off HR just feels a million times more exciting.
3.) They're pointless. Give us a full year-long program to work toward. When I grind through the program moments this year, I just go on autopilot and forget about what's happening on the screen. And when I get through all the good rewards, there's no point in doing moments. It's August, guys. I'm not grinding through 10 moments to get a little closer to a 5-pack of standard TS packs.
4.) They're too long. If SDS is truly choosing noteworthy moments then this is going to solve itself. Also, the Hero/Villain concept prevents them from giving us obnoxious missions, like Strike out 11 batters in 6 innings" or whatever. Focus, SDS! Focus!
And as an added bonus, giving us a huge yearlong program to work toward gives us something to do between featured programs. Once most of us get through the really good rewards, we stop caring. This gives us a big project to work on between featured programs.
Also, who wouldn't want to play as Bill Buckner and get the glove down for real this time, or strike out that fat smug Babe Ruth as he calls his shot, or break up Kershaw's no-hitter in the 9th inning?
Anyway. Moments! They could be better.
When they initially released moments it was to recreate historical moments in baseball history. They just took it and tied it to Topps Now then went completely overboard with them. They are literally just a boring waste of time, energy and patience.
The good news is they can still do both! This wouldn't have to interfere with the POTM weekly missions. Those could cater to the young kids who think Clayton Kershaw is an "old school pitcher" and just want to recreate moments with today's stars. The H v V program could be an entirely separate deal that would be exciting for us old farts who would rather play as Bobby Thompson and recreate the Shot Heard Round the World than spend 15 minutes trying to get an XBH with, like, Bobby Dalbec or whoever.

Hit a homerun with bobby bradley with 30 contact and 50 power vs lefties off of Mike Minor

I believe that highlight is playing on an infinite loop in the entrance of the HoF museum in Cooperstown.

Baseball is a repetitive. But more specifically they have done historical moments although the usually appear as Dailies, Other Programs centered on a player, or main programs that have flashback packs and henchmen. When moments for these historical events happen they usually do use historical uniforms and parks (although those are limited)
2.) They're meaningless and not noteworthy. hitting a HR with Andrew Vaughn is, like, whatever. It's just a thing that happened in a game that no one cares about. Hitting Mazeroski's walk-off HR just feels a million times more exciting.
As mention above they do give us historical moments but honestly I don't see how having a moment for Mazeroski to hit a walk off home run is significantly different than having to hit a walk off moment with any other player. Then does SDS just recycle that Mazerowski moment over and over every year?
3.) They're pointless. Give us a full year-long program to work toward. When I grind through the program moments this year, I just go on autopilot and forget about what's happening on the screen. Maybe for you but without moments I rarely would even make it to the Boss packs in a Program. So they are anything but pointless to me. Sure if the only reward was something I don't care about then I just don't do them. For example I have skipped almost all of the City Connect uniforms and their moments because I don't care about the reward.
4.) They're too long. If SDS is truly choosing noteworthy moments then this is going to solve itself. Also, the Hero/Villain concept prevents them from giving us obnoxious missions, like Strike out 11 batters in 6 innings" or whatever. Focus, SDS! Focus!
I think you are truly overestimating how much noteworthy moments actually matter. I still contend that, even as Cardinals fan, that recreating David Freese's walk off in Game 6 of the 2011 WS would really feel no different than hitting a walkoff with Paul Goldschmidt or even Lars Nootbaar
I will say that the heroes and villians idea seems kind of interesting. Although it could be unbalanced as getting a batter out is far easier than hitting a Home Run with a player.
And, in the end, people would still complain that moments suck. You'll never change the minds of those who hate that they even exist.

Not sure how I got mentioned on this one lol but I am one of those people who will always hate their existence. I also understand that some people do enjoy them, so I am not starting a petition to have them removed I just choose not to do them unless there is a POTM card locked behind them that I truly want or need for collections. The Heroes V. Villians is probably the best idea for giving them a fresh look and to possibly drag those of us who hate them into enjoying them. Make it a month or year long program with a couple legends along the reward path and you might have me hooked.

I think you and I get very different kinds of enjoyment from this game. I enjoy the history and players more than the gameplay. I would have significantly more fun hitting a HR moment if it's Fisk in the WS vs. Joe Tubbo in some game in July. Maybe we just have different approaches to the game.

As an A’s fan Kirk Gibson is the villain.

I would have significantly more fun hitting a HR moment if it's Fisk in the WS vs. Joe Tubbo in some game in July.
Now SDS is going to punish you by making you hit 3 doubles in a game with Nick Castellanos. Not XBH. Doubles. I know how much you loved that moment.
