Account linking question

I want to unlink one Xbox account for another, can I do this without losing progress? Or do I have to link another platform first before unlinking the Xbox account?

You won't lose any progress because it is kept on the server. As long as you know what your main account is, then you won't have any problems. After you unlink, your progress on your sub-account will revert back to the way it was before it was linked.

I only have an Xbox account linked to my Show account so my progress will stay once I unlink said account and replace it with my new Xbox account?

The progress is linked to the Xbox account itself. If you're trying to store it on the Show Nation account to transfer it to the new Xbox account, that's not possible.
You can think of account linking as if the Show Nation account is acting as a middle man so that other platforms can look to the primary account to see what you have. If you primarily play on Xbox, nothing ever actually transfer to a Playstation or Nintendo account. Those accounts just look to the Xbox account, and once unlinked they go back to the state they were in when first linked.
