Perceived speed differential on pitches out of the zone

Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems to me that pitches outside of the zone are "faster." This would make sense on fastballs under the chin, but offspeed pitches look like fast balls when they are tossed out of the zone. On HoF this really speeds up my bat on pitches in the zone making me early on fastballs and too early on breaking pitches. But on changeups below the zone I'm late 100% of the time. Is this all in my head!?!
