I'm following baseball for the first time this year, due to this videogame, so I don't really know how trades/call ups/lineup changes work in real life. In this mode though, I keep getting asked if I want to trade for new players, and also what attributes I want to trade for. I don't really know how to assess this, and especially with call ups the dudes on my team already seem strictly better. Do players get injured or something if you don't change lineups? It hasn't happened yet. I don't see why I would ever take the time to manage my team.

You don’t HAVE to. They give you the option to target needs and trade away a strength to shore up another area. Same thing with call ups. Sometimes the choice is just not there and you pass.

What are the benefits and how do I assess them? What are the downsides to just letting the game manage the lineup automatically?

Your play style is what you want to go with. I like to steal, so I tend to pick players with higher speed. I also like younger players that I can promote so I take that into account. I'm not saying that's for you, just try a few things.

As an Angels fan I love Rendon as a player but his card is not worth the price of keeping him. I usually shop him and put a young "A" potential low 70s ovr player in his place If possible. That'll free up 30K plus when it comes to free agents after the first season. You'll notice some clubs offer useless players. If all three are, you can always just decline them. You get 4 trades a season, I think you can only decline the first one and still get all 4. If you make a huge mistake, you can always start over.

For me, potential is the most important part of trading and call ups. It's not as necessary for fast tracks though. It's one of the few things that don't often change. With the Pirates, Ke'Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds start as "B" and can turn to "A" with good play, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

I suggest you start with your favorite team for a few seasons, then switch to a team you have little or no experience with. If you're a Yankee fan start with them, then do the Diamondbacks. Whatever works for you. Try new things and have fun.

Ah, I was under the impression March to October was a single season mode. Not sure where I got that idea. So I should promote people in the hope they will be better than my current starters in subsequent seasons? I still don't fully know how to get a good picture of what my team is good at/lacking but I'll keep those things in mind!

This is the first year it can be multiple seasons. It's up to you, I always promote of fast track because it will immediately improve their ovr by 2-6 points and improve potential if fast tracked. If you can't use them, they will become tradeable. I use trades for position players and free agency for pitchers. Call ups and fast tracks, I use for either. If you play enough you'll start to develop your style.
