I would probably point towards foul balls bringing up averages, more balls in play means more balls get down

All you have to do to raise your online batting averages is play occasionally on casual rookie/rookie mode. You get xp, but no pxp, but the stats count for online play. I played a game last night, we both had 14 hits each. 28 hits in 1 game. That was actually a fun game.
