Wouldnt it make more sense to upgrade player cards instead of having multiple cards of each person, effectively making earlier version of cards obsolete?

This would fix obsolete live series cards, early version release of Awards, Postseason, Milestone, etc…. Also not everyone has the time to parallel (upgrade) multiple versions of a player.

Live Series cards will be upgradeable based on current season moments, awards, Milestones, paralleling, challenges, etc…

Previous Player cards can still be released via player programs and season programs… these cards can also be upgradeable based on previous moments, paralleling, challenges, etc…

Ways to implement this could be done in multiple ways…Specific example is release Ken Griffey Sr. and upgrade his card from rookie OVR 79 to Awards OVR 88 (examples) and then the following month release Rookie Ken Griffey Jr and start upgrading him while his Fathers cards is still “useable” and they can play together.

Live series players have moments and awards challenges to upgrade these cards based on the current season (All-Star, Awards, Post-Season, Milestones, Records, etc).

Design Skins for cards can be added so upgraded cards will look different.

Live Series card get All-Star tag, record breaking tag, milestone tag, etc… once challenge or moment is completed.

Previous players when released are upgraded from rookie to Awards/Prime/Signature

Would it make sense in a business model? Probably not unless upgrading was heavily monetized.

Can easily monetize a rare or hard to get “rookie” card for let’s say Ken Grifffey Jr.

He is only obtained from going 12-0 in BR (or something of similar difficulty) and costs over a million stubs.

Just a quick example… anything can be monetized. This would effectively make “rookie” cards the most sought after cards. Similar to real life (most of the time)

But you have to think about the people that spend money, especially in a pretty friendly sports title comparatively speaking. People who spend in MLB aren't looking to buy a card they then have to grind with. They are doing so because they either don't have the time or they have enough money that they value what time they do save over the money they have.

    Instant gratification sells more.

So if I upgrade a card, I lose the previous version forever? That’s a huge no thanks from me.

Those “obsolete” cards still have use in BR, certain events, theme teams, collections, etc.

Each player could be changed to any team they played for (similar to madden). I would argue that not having a 99 Maddux or Glavine right at this very moment that I am typing for my Braves “theme team” is broken.

You do have a 99 Maddux for your braves theme team, he just isn’t wearing a braves uniform. You have a glavine too, his best card will never be a 99 though. Nothing about that is broken. It’s not like you see their actual uniforms in-game. Changing cards to different teams would just be stupid and pointless, especially cards based on a milestone or certain season/part of season.

EA has a cool set up with Hockey Ultimate team. A card can be upgraded and you can keep advancing it through the year as higher overall cards come. The base card is sellable and you get refunded some of the coins or power up cards needed to upgrade the card if you wish to revert it and sell the base card. I don't know that I love this idea over the current set up SDS has and I love SDS for not being pay to play like EA but I agree with the obsolete cards system needed an upgrade. When you wait to complete the live series collection you end up with a bunch of cards you don't use and it takes away some of the fun. If the live series collection and early programs gave you upgradable cards this could extend the life of these cards.

The problem is extending life of cards isn't profitable unless you go the EA route. As a consumer, I think those kind of things would be fun, but at the end of the day, to overhaul that much of how cards are earned, there has to be money in it for the developer.

IMO only one change to programs is needed: remove the time limit on innings. Otherwise they're just fine the way they are.

I would like to see at least a little bit of charging the mound or an occasional bench clearing brawl.

Believe that it's in the contract that SDS cannot do that. MLB doesn't want it in the game.
