A little disappointed with 92 Nolan Ryan...
-
Just thought I'd throw this out there for those of you that are considering going after Ryan from the Astros collection. I was planning on going after Nolan Arenado to upgrade my team, but I pivoted to Nolan Ryan instead. It was actually a little cheaper for me to buy the 4 diamonds and 6 golds that I needed from the Astros to complete that collection than it would have been to just get Arenado. Plus, I need more lefty bats than righties in my lineup, I already have Eddie Mathews at third and platoon him with Kris Bryant on the bench, and there's always good TA options to pursue to plug in at third if I decide to.
Anyways, I guess I was expecting 92 Ryan to be somewhat reminiscent of last years 99 Ryan, which was probably foolish. Most of his fastballs were between 96 and 98, with a couple hitting 99 mph and I even had one reach 101 mph. This surprised me, because it was after several innings so I just assumed that he didn't have the outlier quirk and it would not be happening. Obviously his control is erratic, but honestly, it isn't as bad as you'd think. I was able to locate most of his fastballs high and outside, and if I got in to trouble, I could just aim a fastball right down the middle of the plate and be a little early. Some of these pitches ended up painting the bottom and inside parts of the plate. Hey, they can't read me if I don't even know where the pitch is going, right?
Anyways, I won the game, but I did give up two runs to a subpar player. If I had played a better opponent, I may have been hit much harder and lost the game. I'm going to keep Ryan as my number three starter, but I thought I'd share this for anyone to consider before seriously pursuing him.
Also, as a throw in, any recommendations for my fifth starter? I kinda have a first world problem, having Kluber, Newhouser, Ryan, and Prior (He's only an 86 from the Cubs collection rewards, but he's been excellent for me). This leaves me with 90 Verlander, 88 Reyes, 90 Walter Johnson, and 85 Flaherty for the 5th spot. Flaherty is out of the question, but the other three are all in the mix. I'm not a big fan of Johnson's windup or H/9, so I'm mostly considering Verlander and Reyes, and leaning toward Verlander.

Haha, too many Nolans to keep straight I guess. Thanks, I fixed it to say Arenado. And didn't I see you post on here saying you were done with this game? If so, welcome back.

Never liked Nolan. Too wild. Even if he's effective, he's boring imo

It seems like you like guys with overpowering fastballs so I’d recommend Pearson if you have the stubs if not Koepech. Pearson can absolutely dot but gives up a fair amount of homeruns if you miss bad

He’s legit terrible.
