Noone is saying act like it never existed or dont teach about the horrors of the past. We are saying don't honor them or display them with statues or other offerings. Teach it, don't honor it.A name of a football, baseball team honors the horrors of the past? Are you really peddling that? People need to get over being offended at everything. Especially things which happened 150 - 300 or more years ago.

Reading comprehension is hard, I get it. I was referring to statues honoring horror of thr past. (You don't see Hitler or Nazi statues in Germany).
The team name was honoring an inaccurate name that the people who were being mislabeled were offended by and protested. I doubt you speak for Native Americans and neither do I but I do listen when they speak out against things and honor their wishes. It's not that hard to not be an A-hole -
I kinda like it. The uniforms will retain the same look and feel it sounds like and the keeping the "dians" end of the name I think it s good transition. Spiders was last used in the 1800's...so who cares, and Rocks (while cool with the Rock and Roll HOF) didn't get me excited either. I think it will grow on people....it's certainly better than "Browns" LOL!

After more thought I do think "The Tribe" would of been a perfect fit for both sides of the argument. Theyve been knicknamed The Tribe for many years as it stands, and it doesn't really represent any specific people since its just another term for community.

Well lots going on in this thread.
Post if you like it or don't. Keep personal attacks and details political statements out of the conversation.
We will be watching.

Guardians = Silly name. That said it will probably be voted the best name ever in a couple of years.
Sidenote: What's the record for # of "This post is deleted!" In a single thread?

No they're not. They're the Cleveland Guardians.
-
I heard that they were considering the Cleveland Spiders, one of the names they went by before they were the Indians. I hate changing it either way, but Spiders sounds a lot cooler than Guardians ever will.

The Spiders is way worse. At least Guardians has ties to the city.

I just read that the Cleveland Indians were called that in the first place to honor Louis Sockalexis, the first Native American to play in Major League Baseball.
So let me get this straight. The Cleveland Spiders change their name to the Cleveland Indians to honor Sockalexis, but 100 years later, they're forced to change it because people are offended?
This is what happens when you don't learn history.

Did you not see how they depicted Chief Wahoo?

Yes I did, and I totally agree with ditching that logo (see my first post on this thread about that). But I was referring to the "Indians" team name.
