He's not really going to have a lot of cards to do exchanges for TA3, and probably barely any, if any, All Star cards to help with TA3 missions. He'd basically have to just grind 100 plate appearances with scrub players. Or showdown like you suggested, but if he's new he might not want to mess with showdown right off the bat.
I'd do what some others recommended and start with Topps Now moments and get a decent team and do some conquest maps to start out. I was late to start playing last year and that's what I did.

Once you get enough Topps Now cards to fill out a decent lineup, then go hit the POTM programs.
Adding on to this great suggestion, I would reccomend using them while playing the TA2 Conquest maps. They give decent rewards + hidden rewards and will help you start accumulating points on the TA2 program as well.
Unless others think there are better Conquest maps to work on first?

This^ grind out a few showdowns and you’ll have a team full of goons in like 2 days

Idk. The TA3 players kind of make it not worth doing TA2. Like previously suggested I’d go with TA3 exclusively. If you got some stubs just put in a bunch of orders for high silvers to complete the exchanges

I would probably go Topps Now moments to unlock some players first, then you can use those players to gain some progress in the POTM programs and TA 1 and 2 or sell them for stubs to use elsewhere if you want. Then you just kind of decide which guys you want to go for first.
If/when you are completing the TA programs... it is always faster to finish the pitcher missions than the hitter missions for me and I think most of the community. So if I am just trying to complete the TA program vs targeting specific players I always get the pitchers from the choice packs first.

Welcome! It's a good time to start. I pre-ordered and play almost everyday. I have completed all the collections, all the moments, all the programs, and have acquired almost all the non live series cards as well. I've spent over 600 on buying stubs like a tool.
You'll have a team rated as high as mine in a week. Just do ta3.

All good suggestions. I was looking at those POTM Programs and those seem the way to start.
On avg, with continues play, how long would it take to complete a Conquest Map?
I'm wondering if I should do the TA maps first or the 4th of July map first, as it seems to have a deadline attached to it.
Also, what about all the 'odds and ends' maps?
I'm thinking of saving the USA map for later.

The TA maps shouldn't take more than a couple hours each if that... worst part is having to take like 20-30 minutes to sim the end of it. 4th of July map went pretty quick.

My play style is similar to yours.
I wouldn't lock in the 3rd inning bosses unless the extra 50k xp is the difference between reaching/not reaching this month's boss, which could be a factor since you're joining mid-inning. At least it would refund 20,000 stubs from your initial investment at the expense of the player lock.
The Topps Now cards always always seem to do well for me offline. If you can stomach the Moments, you can fill out a competitive roster quickly and free while gaining xp. If you hate Moments or have a few stubs to burn, they're usually inexpensive on release. If purchased at around 5k (the same as their quick sell value), they're also a no-risk way to turn a quick profit while you learn the market.

He's got 100k in 3rd inning players... Rather have TA 3 guys than those 3 inning guys.

Team affinity 3 program brother! It’s a free grind and these cards basically makes a lot of the other cards on the market irrelevant Your gonna get a lot of free packs along the way to help you build up your stub count.
