Question about match ups in ranked games

I played a game the othet day against a team with around a 150-150 record online. At the time I had only 5 wins this season when we played.
From the start of the game every player on his team was hitting no less than .400 with multiple players with 50+ homeruns. Basically he was a far better player than I was and by a lot. I'll admit after his 5th homerun in the first inning off of a pitch that hit home plate I quit. After I got a message from him thanking me for his 50th win this season.
I dont understand how I was matched up with a player who was clearly better and much further along in the season in regards to wins. For the record I don't expect to not lose, but this far and away the most extreme difference I've come across. -
