The Show has several different controller game modes. Pitching has the new-fangled "Pinpoint" introduced this year among others.
I'm going to focus on batting. Directional and zone.
In Directional, correct me if I'm wrong, the PCI stays in the middle of the plate and the AI dictates the result of your swing. Does that sound fair? Also, wasn't this the original and only swing mode? Likely the mode chosen for the occasional player..perhaps even some veteran's I don't know.
And Zone, then, is a mode in which you have more control to move the PCI around and adjust for the location of the pitch.
So, does logic not say if you're pitching to someone using Directional and peppering the outside of the zone and painting the corners you would strike them out every time? Unless the AI actually adjusts the AB and animates something different. Which, we know, it does because those Directional batters have a lot of success as well..when the AI decides it's time for them to have success.
So, don't you believe the same code-logic is designed for Zone mode but in a more handicapping way. Even if you do get the PCI in the perfect spot to jack that fast-ball the AI is going to paint a different animation.
I'm just saying the fact you have both these modes and, believe me or not, there isn't a whole heck of a lot of difference in the W/L of players using one or the other. I've tested it myself. But, do your own test.
So reasoning says it's the AI that determines the outcomes of the pitch result. Moving the PCI around makes little difference. I truly wish it did, because I invested a lot of time a few years back in getting pretty good with Zone. That's a return on time investment of nil.

If you think directional is a viable option online at higher difficulties I got 2 words for you...
Good luck -

Good luckSo, are you guessing that someone that uses directional only will never make it to a higher level online? I don't agree because that would be a huge marketing failure.

If directional was so good the guys like mgunskis, Cbrev, pitching rebel, Kyle, sam adams and others would preach about it. Zone is better and more rewarding, he’ll the king of directional bigtom changed to zone

Well, SDS needs to hibernate Directional. Because the very fact it exists and a lot of players use it, emphasizes the fact the AI is animating a lot of undeserved and cheap homeruns. I know Mr. Obvious statement, but it supports my circular reasoning. And, also, suggests it happens with Zone just as much but, likely, more on the handicapping side.
Either way..smoke and mirrors..sleight of hand. We love the AI trickery when it plays to our advantage.
Well some do, but for me it just reminds me how much the game controls the outcomes. Love that CRACK of the bat when I launch one, but I get those mixed emotions knowing that 450 boomer was from me check swinging in the middle of the plate and seeing an animation showing me connecting upper right of the zone. And, then, reflecting that's prob what happened to me in the last game when my opponent hit a game winning homerun. Or what's going to happen in the next game.
You can never get right with how well skilled you are, because it's seldom really about skill.

Directional is for beginners or people that have some sort of impairment that limits their ability. Zone is the mode to use if you want to pinpoint your PCI. Someone using directional only will have an extremely hard time making it to world series -
you lost me on the title

Someone using directional only will have an extremely hard time making it to world seriesIast year was my first with DD and I used it. Couldn't get higher than 683. I've played all this year on Zone because it was smoother with PCI movement. But in the past couple of weeks, that isn't so true anymore and I'm getting nothing but false PCI feed back. .

So let's be clear. The few replies I'm seeing state, and I'll put this in proper context w/o embellishing:
MLB the Show's Directional mode is only for occasional players. Even though the game has this mode you can never be successful with it. The only way to be really successful is to use Zone.
So, my question is why have it? Why have 4 different pitch modes? If pinpoint (so it's now being heralded out here on the forums) is the only way to be REALLY good..why have the other modes?
I've played a whole lot of FIFA. Maybe more than The Show. This would be like FIFA having 4 different sets of shoes your player's can wear. And 3 types of ball. Shoes that make you faster but require a little more discipline. Balls that allow you to bend the shot/pass more, but require a little more practice.
They don't do that because everyone that plays that game is all about being the best they can be in Ultimate Team. Everyone would utilize those higher level modes.
I dunno, just believe the company needs to focus on one mode. It's so much easier to make the sleight of hand/AI premeditation seem consistent. As long as you have Directional/meter out there and players are using it and having success (and they do..don't doubt that for one minute) it just underscores the fact AI owns the strike-zone and it will generate the animation that fits the outcome.

They have it because not everyone that plays DD plays online to be the best. Also it would be incredibly stupid for a company to have 1 way of playing that has a steep learning curve.
