I thought 19 was better than 20. Just my take. 20 is messy, in my view, because of the variations in gameplay based on the capacity for players to adjust their visual settings in the "faster," "balanced," and "sharper" settings.
I agree. I enjoyed 19 more than 20 just on the pure fact that you could spray the ball around and/or hit bombs. I am more of a spray hitter so I would rather that type of game over bomb or bust.
20 seems more like 18 -- home run or nothing.
The amount of ridiculous outs I’ve seen in 20 I don’t understand if they do that because they pay attention to the stats too much so they nerf the reward on input? It’s gotta be that.

It's because of the variety of setups you're playing against. I played MLB the Show 20 on a first gen PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5. First gen doesn't have the option to change video output like the Pro and the PS5. Plus, the first gen doesn't have the online speeds to keep up with the newer systems.
Once you get to Pro and PS5, you can change video output settings. Each setting impacts game play in a major way.
What happens is you're matched up with a variety of different setups. It's incredibly inconsistent to get online timing down. That's also why hit outcomes are so random as well.
I suspect it's only going to get worse for MLB the Show 21, unfortunately. Especially with cross platform game play. I imagine the game will perform better and favor those with next gen systems. The game runs at 4k 60 fps, meaning you will need at least a PS4 Pro and a capable TV to even have a shot at competing. But PS4 Pro just doesn't have the capability or power to run as fast as the PS5--I know this from running diagnostics on both systems. I suspect the Xbox Series X will be the same as the PS5.
Long story short: next gen users will have an advantage. Game play will be inconsistent throughout, in my view.

Is there an emoji of a guy pointing and laughing at a clown who has his head shoved 3 feet up a donkey's turdcutter, but when you look closer at the first guy you can tell that the laughter isn't quite enough to cover up the hopeless tears that are streaming down his face, and then when you look even closer you realize his eyes are just dead and he's got the pain of a million asinine forum posts haunting his soul, but somehow the clown who is currently inhabiting the donkey's small intestine has this self-assured smugness that only ever seems to follow around a man who has no idea what he's talking about but is all too quick to give an opinion that would make the first guy want to climb up into the donkey's colon and just die because it would be better than reading the same stupid things over and over and over and over and over?
I couldn't find that emoji but it's the one I want to use.

It's only been an option in MLB the Show 20, and it's only an option for PS4 Pro and PS5. It's in the audio/visual settings of the game.

Yes, I have been using this option for years.

But, either way, I do think the different settings impact game play. Each time I switch them around, the game plays very differently.

Yeah, I only knew it has been around because along with changing my gameplay settings on day one I also change this option to fastest. PS 5 though I been leaving it on sharper vs CPU because it looks much better and plays as smooth as it can.

So fastest is 1080p. Out of curiosity, do you play on a monitor? If so, do you set it to 1080p for online play?
Sharper doesn't play well online, even on my 2160p monitor. I'm always between fastest and balanced for online play.

Yeah, that is what it is equivalent to. But you will still use whatever resolution your PS is set to. It is just a software adjustment changing the ingame visuals. Kinda like a scaling option. I used only a monitor for years but I have a 4K TV now that is as good at input lag as my monitor so I use that too. I usually just keep the ingame setting on faster for both though.

They do play differently but I don’t think it effects the way other people play against you. It’s just the way you see things happening from how they are happening.

I'm undecided if I like 20 or not I mean I play it all the time pretty much my go to game but it wasn't great nor garbage. I've had a range of emotions whilst playing so I guess it's been entertaining and still zero broke controllers well not intentionally anyway so at least that's a W & a first.

Imo 19 was better than 20. Still not as atrocious as 18, but 20 does so many things wrong, makes it hard to say it's better than 19 which had many flaws as well but not as game breaking as this year.

Agreed. Have been playing 19 again for the past month and outside of the lineouts it’s a pretty good game. A lot more hit variety even with lineouts. Pitching better, fewer hrs, and input seems to matter more on both pitching and hitting. The scary thing is actual gameplay seems to get worse year over year. 16 played better than 17. 17 played better than 19 and 19 played better than 20. Let’s assume 18 never happened.

Truth. I really wish they'd just update 16 visually and performance wise, but keep the core as it was. Maybe tweak the bunting a bit lol. 17 was a really enjoyable game as well, but a step backwards from 16.

This is one reason I have not pre-ordered yet and not sure if I want to even buy until a week or two after launch to see what people are saying.
After playing the beta last year I was committed to about $300 of stub purchases. That dropped to $0 when the game launched and patches start happening. It's not a significant amount of money for SDS by any means but it was revenue they lost out on. TS21 will be the same if I don't find the game particularly enjoyable.
