My parents did on Christmas Eve 1991. Took a Game Boy box and filled it with socks. I was so mad and disappointed. I ended up getting the Game Boy Christmas morning.

I agree they probably will get it on Christmas but people are selling just the PS5 box for around $50 on eBay for pranks.

I live in an apartment complex and have seen several PS5 boxes in the cardboard recycling area of my building. The parents may have just gotten a box out of somewhere similar and then scammed their kids to get the views.
