Question about server types.
-
Recently had a conversation with another user on here and it got me thinking about the difference between a game that has dedicated servers compared to one that is peer to peer.
So, this game (MLB The Show) is played on peer to peer.
I assume that means that even though both players have to connect within SDS's servers; the person that is the home team is 'hosting'. Which could mean that any issues with connection is on there end. Am I assuming that correctly?
.
And if so, could my connection issues be related to the bandwidth that the PSN servers can handle?I pay good money for my internet because I need to for work.
My setup is 400/65. Direct connected, with a laptop, I can hit that speed.
Direct connected with the PS4; I can only hit 250-275. That tells me that either the PS4, or the servers through PSN, can't handle anything over that. Correct?
So, my question is this: if I am experiencing connection issues with this game, and none of the other games I play online, what's the problem?
Is it my connection? If so, why arent I disconneting from the other games servers?
If it was my PS4; wouldn't ALL the games I play be affected?
I doubt they would reply; but I would be interested to hear from someone @SDS about these issues.

I've got nothing in terms of actual information, but I'm happy to add my thoughts:
Matchmaking for these games has been infamously atrocious since the start of DD. It stands to reason that the home team hosts h2h games, because there wouldn't be lag on the pitcher selection/lineup screens pre-game otherwise. But like you and everyone else, we don't know for sure. If the community's assumptions on how matchmaking takes place and how their P2P connection facilitates h2h gameplay, we'd surely all be better off if games were server hosted.
If your internet was the issue, you'd see drops across all your devices.
If your console was the issue, you'd see drops across all your games.
I'm presuming matchmaking in its current form is dependent upon the PlayStation Network, as that's the most logical way for SDS to implement it and none of us are required to sign up for an MLB The Show account prior to playing online. We just have to have our PSN account with PS+. This is where I'm leery of this game being cross platform: we have these issues year after year within one network's ecosystem. Can you imagine the negative impact on connection if there is an intermediary introduced that facilitates handshakes between Xbox, Switch, whatever? Then again, simply server hosting games in the first place could help negate the negative impact caused by cross platform gameplay.
TL;DR: it isn't your connection. It isn't your PS4. It isn't (for the most part) PSN. And we're all clueless.

For one, DL/UL speed doesnt help your connection. 10 down 2 up would be plenty. It is more about the quality of the connection and Ping.
Also the PS4 doesnt DL a large enough file to properly test your Download speed. That is why it is always lower than actual provided because it doesnt give it time to ramp up. Notice how fast it does it. They fixed this on PS5 though. It takes a lot longer to do the speed test and it shows an accurate DL and UL speed. The best way to see you speed on PS4 is actually to download a game, or a patch or something. Then you will see it running and the right speeds.

Other than going into the consoles browser and checking my speed they a site like Speedtest.net; how would I check my PING?
Also, if a console can't correctly measure your UL/DL speed; how would it correctly measure your PING?

It isn't all that useful, but you can ping the MLBTS servers here: https://pingserverstatus.com/mlbtheshow.php

Ping is a quick measurement of the communication between you and whatever host. This isnt a large file DL or UL. 2 completely different measurements. And the PS4 measures DL/UL ok, it just doesnt move a large enough file to get your full capability on the speed test. But it uses your full capability when downloading a file. Next time you DL something on your PS4 look at the speed. It will be your max DL speed most likely. When you download a file on Speedtest.net look how long that takes compared to the test on PS4.
