How do you message people during or after a game? A lot of times I find myself wanting to say ‘nice pitch“ or “dude, that was a bomb” - or more accurately “stop pausing the [censored] game and play” (kidding, sort of)

Message them on the PS4.

I know it sounds stupid but how do you do that during a game? Don’t you have to back out to do that?

Just pause it, then click the PS button. Then go to message them. But if you take too ling, your pause time will run out, and you will lose.

Another option is to have your laptop next to you and visit the psn website on there.

Exactly. I have it in my ipad, so it works for both.
But don’t you just hate those clowns who will taunt you all game with their bunt dance and other shenanigans, but have their personal settings set to private so you can’t message them? That has got to be the definition of a coward.

The phone app is the easiest way to message other players, although I advise against messaging during the game. I'm focused when I'm playing and I have no interest in talking even if it's good natured stuff.
Once the game is over if it was a really good clean game, I'll send my opponent a friend request (since my messages are set to friends only) and discuss the highlights before wishing my opponent luck going forward.
