Will We Finally Get Next Gen Graphics in MLB 21?
-
As I sit here, without a PS4 to play MLBTS on because I sold it back in July in anticipation of PS5 pre orders coming out, this question popped into my head, much because I haven't gotten my fix of MLBTS in a few months. I cannot wait to finally play it again next week when PS5 drops.
As a lot of you know, it was announced earlier in the year that MLB The Show will likely be coming to other consoles this year, including Xbox. I don't know about you guys, but to me, this game has looked the exact same for the last few years. A few graphic changes here and there, and even that seems like a stretch. Will we finally get a better looking baseball game this year with the expansion to other consoles outside of Sony? I know SDS is a pretty small studio, and I wonder if this expansion will lead to an increase their funds and overall team size.
I'm really not trying to slander MLBTS or SDS here at all. I just feel like the game has done pretty much everything to get buys each year (adding more legends, making stats go over 99, adding more stadiums, etc.) that eventually, and hopefully soon, there HAS to be something big, like an upgrade in graphics. Feel free to post your opinions or criticize mine if you like.

21 still has to be made for the PS4 to, so I doubt we see any drastic graphic overhaul, I would look towards 22 to see any big change.

you will have to wait until the reveal streams in february to find out, while they will announce the cover and the systems and the preorder bonuses some time this month, they have never released game details until the pre release streams.

This is how I feel about it too. Hopefully we can get a next gen exclusive version in ‘22 and get rid of the flawed engine that’s never been right since inception. Needs a rebuild from ground up, every year has seen some problem crop up. No idea why it all doesn’t get caught and fixed pre-release. We’ve had a baseball game where outfielders refuse to catch routine fly balls for the first few weeks because they’re in a conflicting animation due to their proximity to the outfield wall. That kind of thing should never make it into the final release version, let alone back to back years and then take weeks to fix post launch. All they’d have to do is play the game for any length of time to see these issues occurring. Instead we pay a premium price to preorder and then we’re basically beta testers for the first two months, frustrated as SDS slowly create and test patches to fix the problems we’ve found for them. Not really acceptable.

"Siri, what is 'exponential growth of user base' and how would it affect error detection?"

Come on man, I’m not talking about something that only occurs once every thousand games. Something that happens multiple times a game, every game, that can be repeated consistently shouldn’t be making it into the launch version. I understand that the more players playing, the more these infrequent occurrences will pop up, be documented and subsequently fixed. These subtle little things that rear their heads post launch? Yeah, fine. It happens.
The specific problem I’m referring to was not only about as subtle as the Philly Phanatic walking up to the mound and slapping the player pitching about the face repeatedly with a rainbow coloured Tuna, it also recurred this year at launch, having been fixed (eventually, it took way too long) the year previous. So I can’t concede on this point, it’s just bad development and shows they’re comfortable releasing a shoddy product with a triple A price tag and patching it up later. Not unlike most video game companies these days. It’s not just an SDS specific issue.
