In 1997 Ken Griffey Jr. had 146 AB in which balls were pulled, 147 AB in which balls were up the middle, and 48 AB in which balls were hit oppo.

How can he be a pull hitter for the shift going up the middle more the pulling the ball.

    Please just fix it!

Well if 300 out of 350 balls were put up the middle or to pull side it would make perfect sense to shift him. The shift puts someone directly up the middle and covers the 4 hole.

Bingo, people tend to forget that the shift is as much meant for balls up the middle as for being pulled

Longtime Mariner fan and I remember announcers talking about teams starting to bring back the “Williams shift” to defend against him around this time. Griffey was the first guy teams regularly shifted against in about 40 years and brought this tactic back in to vogue. Therefore; it’s only fitting that the auto shift be placed on him.

2019 Fransisco Lindor pulled or went up the middle 423 out of 498 AB's... shifted 0 times. That was 84.9% of his AB's. In 1997 Griffey's percentage was 85.9%.

By this farce logic, why isn't Lindor shifted?

Because real life teams don't shift against Lindor, they did against Griffey

Where did you get these numbers from, for his pull/middle/oppo stats? I'm seeing that he hit 22.0-22.5% (depending on which site you use) of his batted balls to the opposite field in 2019 (which was a career low too, so if SDS looks at more than just one year for Live Series, the number for Lindor is closer to 25%)

Baseball reference, 2019 splits, location. I combined his numbers since he's a switch hitter.

Interesting. I'm not sure what input Baseball References uses for batted balls, but FanGraphs/Baseball Savant use Statcast and they have the 22.0-22.5% mark. Those two sites are more trustworthy when it comes to batted ball info from my experience.

They need to just remove the auto shift period from the game why is this even a thing ? . Let individual users decide if and when to put it on take off the training wheels .

For 1997? I can't get either site to go back that far.

I think he's referring solely to Lindor

I can see both sides of this issue. I would like to see an option where you can choose to have the auto shift on or off. I personally would leave it on, as I would forget to implement it 110% of the time

There is an option actually, I have auto-shift off, I gave up way to many late doubles and it annoyed me

and how annoying it would be for opponents to enter the quick menu to apply the shift for 70% of the batters or whatever. Letting it happen automatically is convenient

Oh nice. Was unaware of this. Don’t go into the menus much past the initial set up at the beginning of the year.
