Hot Take: Griffey will be the Cover Athlete

Ok hear me out
Let's operate that MLB the show 21 will be multi platform which means they will need a big marketable face that appeals not only to the hardcore but also the causal market.
Now let also look at the fact 99 Griffey has not yet arrived and we know that there is always a special pro order card for the cover star.
Now Sony would love to keep most of their player base on their home console which also means dangling a very sought after card in front of people for pre orders.
I looked to see if there was any anniversary for JR in 2021 which there is not so no link there but JR is well known across baseball he is marketable to not only the core market but he has appeal that transcends the sport and is easily recognizable.
I think this is happening

FLAW: He was the cover athlete in 2017. They wouldn't put the same player as the cover 4 years ago.
I do think the no 99 is good logic, but I doubt it is him. I am hoping for Clemente.
Personally I am surprised that they gave him a 98 because they were going to give him a 99 anyway. -

Additionally I am right there with you on Clemente but he does not have mass appeal to a broad market like JR does and JR is the only legend to appear on the cover also what is the preorder bonus that would help sony keep gamers on their platform?

1st off, a 99 Clemente would be awesome. Second, I was not playing in 10 and 11, so I did not know that. I guess it could happen then.

A 99 Clemente would be awesome however they could not add his card to 20 as a pre order as his rights would be for 21 and on
Business wise Girffey on the cover makes sense more then Clemente does. Look at Mantel he could easily be a cover star but was not used. Also Griffey has always worked very closely with SDS on marketing so their is a much bigger relationship there that puts him in front of media and marketing

Griffey could also be an inning program boss, because there have been nameplates for Inning program bosses when you rank up in program stars

he was a boss last year, they haven't gone back to back all year.
