Why does almost everyone love Orel Hershiser?

I'm new to the game so there's obviously a lot I don't know and need to learn. I know his wind up can throw you off but all he throws is off speed for the most part so my thinking is just sit back and wait for the right "slow" pitch over the plate. For everyone playing hall of fame or legend consistently and like him, why? I'm just trying to understand in hopes of improving my game. I like having a pitcher with a good fastball to go with slow stuff so I guess the real question is how to you pitch effectively as a junk baller in this game?

Its because none of his 5 pitches are flat. They all move horizontally and vertically and all with awesome speed differentials

This. Getting strikeouts can be hard in this game, so the goal should be weak contact instead. Orel is perfect for that.

Well, if you're using him and his control then nothing should really be "over the plate". Cutter in and sinker when located well induce weak contact consistently.

100%. Orel isn’t the prototypical powerhouse pitcher that’ll strikeout everybody. If that’s what you’re trying to accomplish, he’s not for you. He’s a pitch to weak contact kind of guy and the best in the game at exactly that

Yup, best pitcher in the game, if you use him right. If your only method of pitching is using 102mph guys, then you are not going to do well with him
