MLB 19—Base Stealing in Player-Locked Missions, Help?

Been working on the Willie Mays storyline in Moments. I'm on the mission where you hit four HRs and steal 4 bases within 6 games. The home runs, interestingly, have been the easy part.
But I can't steal bases with Mays to save my life. I will lead of first base by a step (and with his speed you would think it's enough), but I'll get tagged out at second anyway. Two step leads have worked sometimes in other missions, but they will throw a pickoff attempt every time, multiple times. Lefties and righties both.
I could've sworn that base stealing was easier than this in MLB 18. The controls don't seem as responsive, they're more clunky. Is there something I'm not doing right? What can I do to improve my player-locked stealing?

Don't take a lead, start stealing once the pitcher's leg starts moving (starts his windup) and hook slide by holding L1 and flicking the right stick diagonally up and to the right.
