Mariano has been an absolute bleep show for me online.
When I first got him he would get blown up regularly. But while grinding his stats in the event I have somewhat learned to pitch with him. His ERA initially was 9+ but through stubbornness and alot of babying the card, I have gotten his ERA down into the 5's.

I am about to hit the stats needed to prestige him but I am reluctant to lock in a 90K card that still gets abused on occasion.
Is the blood diamond Mariano any better?

I'm thinking about selling him back- until he get's cheaper again... I have similar results to you... high 7's ERA... will only bring him in with a 5 run lead to get some innings... What have you found worked for you? mix of pitches, locations?

He's not the shutdown closer I thought a 99 would be... granted I haven't hit HOF in RS yet, so that may be it as well..

You have to baby the card. Think like Craig Kimbrel in real life.
Never pitch him in back to back games
Use him for 1 inning or max 4 outs
I avoid using the cutter early on. The sinker induces ground balls, but not the high sinker which is the meta, but the sinker low (in or out) works.
The change up to righties works also.

I have used him in the event only, which is on HOF, and he simply does not have swing and miss stuff.
And I havent been able to use his cutter to break bats like Mo used to do.
His primary pitch IMO is his worst pitch.

Exactly what I've found... Cutters in, seem to be crushed, but smart players are looking for that, and ready for it.. His change up floats a bit..... agreed, high sinkers don't do well..

His cutter has less movement than let's say the SS Kenley from last year. That was an effective cutter because of it's break.
Mariano's is like a 2 seam fastball at times.
Every time I face him, I just wait for a pitch breaking into the middle of the zone.
Mo has a tendency to hang it even with perfect release or being just off.

Glad others are having the same problem. As arguably the best closer in the history of the game his SS card is not representative of that. I have the Prestige Version but haven't used it yet. I doubt it's any better.

    I don't think there's any argument 😉

It is Mo by a mile.
But in this game he is a heart attack waiting to happen.

It's like I am wishing that the card was better. And we all know if a card sucks, it will not magically get better. I can't believe I got happy when my closer dropped his ERA into the 5's.

Been using Mo in the events so much and he’s been amazing. Used the prestige card in RS only once but 2 shutout innings in the game as expected. I love this card so much and I’m a big yanks fan. Nothing is more fun than throwing backdoor cutters to lefties and getting them looking. I would also attribute a lot of the success I’ve had to mixing up the pitches a lot as well. Not the most realistic to be throwing multiple sliders and changes with Mo but it’s dirty dirty stuff.

I'm surprised his /9's weren't almost maxed. He should have like 96 control too

Low sinkers, change ups down and away, and then sneak in a fastball as they expect a cutter as the strikeout pitch. Toss in a below the zone slider every so often. This has been really effective on HOF so far.

This, and the fact I used the 87 card, are the exact reasons I didn’t pick him and went with walker who ratings wise is second best OF in the game. Threw him twice with the 87 and lit up. Way more success with other pitchers, stick to what I have. If I had this One I’d probably spam sinker and offspeed. If throwing cutter to righties I’d only throw it way outside. No chance I’d let that in the zone

Well I figured the way this forum can be sometimes that there'd be a few that would try to argue a more solid stance but I agree with you.

I don't know why people are surprised. His 87 was God awful, increasing stats per 9 and adding a pitch isn't going to magically make him usable.

To extend on this, if you need help in bullpen, I’d recommend if you took Rivera, sell and buy Dibble. That guy is 1 hard card to hit

It also does not help he is being used a bunch in events so we are seeing a lot of this card and getting familiar with it.

    This...
Sir you are 1 trillion percent correct !!!!

His 87 was so bad I sold him week one for a nice profit.
    I should have known better.
Nostalgia is getting the better of a lot of us.

Would people sell him (I picked him for the 5th inning) if it gets you close to completing the LS collection? I'm down to Trout, Verlander, and Cole, and have 200k and 90 or so gold players, and 15 extra diamonds (I planned on waiting until PotM drops). He hasn't been great for me even against the CPU, but still want to give him more time to figure out his repertoire.

    Mantle rakes
    Biggio v good
Seems like you have sheff, who also takes

If I wasn’t dumb and didn’t collect Oswalt, I think I’d have sold all of them besides chipper, and walker. And frankly, if I could sell chipper I probably would. Not as good with him this year as I was last. Been on my bench. Some people have different success but for the foreseeable future all 3 collection rewards will be in my lineup. Throw in some FOTF and just your normal pickups via leveling and you got a team

For sure, and taking it a step further, my best hitters for average are Brock, Brett, and Gwynn. Walker hits HR's at the highest rate, and I have the collections done.

If I didn't have collections locked in yet, I would absolutely spend the stubs on market guys instead. They are good cards, but they aren't even the best hitting cards on my team anymore.

SDS has knocked it out of the park with content this year. If TA's are the same next year, I won't be doing the collection.

Some limited use, but I've found him much better in clutch situations (with RISP), I may just start bringing him in with runners already on. Also with that huge stamina I won't hesitate to bring him in the 8th inning as a closer, or for me 7th even, as I use Henke right now to close righty. He gets better if he can get a few outs and get confident.

You have to be extremely careful pitching with Mo. I prefer dibble and Chapman over him but he’s already locked into the collection so
