I grew up in Calgary, and never took a single French class in public school. Ojibwe was a bigger option.
I moved to Ontario as a teen, and it's definitely more prevalent the more east you go. I now live in Ottawa, and French is 1/3 the population here.
My wife is 1st language french. I still can't form a sentence though. I just smile and nod when I go to Quebec for cheap beer
