I know I’ve seen a couple threads about the new wave of prospect cards and how some aren’t happy with them (which I’m not really a fan of either). I don’t like them bc they haven’t done anything at the highest level, but you wanna make some, fine whatever. BUT when 3 of the top 5 cards you can buy are prospect cards, prospect cards?! Nahh man this is dumb. NO ONE should be up there with Trout UNLESS it’s a legend or maybe a flashback. We’re talking about one of or the greatest player of this generation. What about that Miggy card? Those prospects shouldn’t be better than that card! That card is so special man and if you don’t know why then go look it up. Then look up how many guys have actually done it. I could go on but there’s point.
Still April...
What’s that have to do with anything? It could be Christmas and I’d feel the same way.

It’s a fantasy baseball mode. It’s not that big of a deal. If you don’t like the cards .. just don’t use them? Do you have a point? Of course. At least try to have fun with it. Or don’t play DD? It is what it is.
I know this is just a video game, but it’s a sports video game where ratings are based off of their stats and really what hardware they’ve earned even. Comparing a prospect rated the same as that Miggy card is like giving them an award before they’ve even set foot on a major league field. I know I don’t have to use them, I’m just saying what I think that’s all brother.
Unless you can ascertain with certainty that Mantle would have the same stats playing today, then it's just fantasy.
If you can make a Mantle card with better attributes than Trout without any actual facts saying he would be better than Trout today, then you can make future stars based off that same line of reasoning.
Ding ding ding

Mantle has 18 years of stats to go off of. What does that prospect have? I don’t care about then and now, stats are stats. Will ratings be perfect, no but at least there’s stats to go off of. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing the fact that Mantle's stats are 50+ years old.
So we can base card ratings off 50 or 60 year old stats, but not way more recent minor league stats? It's all the same "what if" fantasy.

Why wouldn't guys like mantle,Ruth, etc not have similar careers? if anything id think they'd be even better- smaller ballparks, juiced balls, etc. can't say faster pitching cause in 2014-15 no one could hit these high 90s guys and now everyone crushes them, I think 20 yr old version of these old time legends would adjust quick and perform just as good or better.
pitchers in the other hand, with everyone a 30 homer guy swinging for the fences....it be harder for them -
I dont get why people are so bent out of shape over these cards. Who really cares what their names are. I'm using the card and playing, I dont care about the name. Everyone said they wanted line up diversity. There is so many good early cards there should be loads of diversity already.
That is the main goal. I get it though none of these players have ever earned ratings like that in a game but seriously, who cares of the name.
Also, the card art of these cards is fantastic

So we assume that these guys would still be great superstars today. Just like some people assume these future stars will be great someday.

Ok, first post/reply ever for me. But, my 9 year old son looking over my shoulder saw this and said “Its pretty stupid that a prospect is rated higher than Mike Trout. He’s a rookie. What if he breaks both his knees and never ends up doing anything”. To him, I replied "he's not even a rookie". He hasn't even come up for a cup of coffee.
Anyway, thanks for the entertainment you guys provide on these forums. Since the Rona, I find myself reading them. I have no idea why. But, hey, keep the posts and the snark replies coming.

Who cares if there 50+ years old? That’s where the game was then and it’s where it’s at now. All I care about is that Mantle was in the MLB and has stats to go off of. Not someone like Luis Patino (the best overall rated card you can buy right now) who’s most recent level was with the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles. He’s rated 96 overall by the way, better than Max Scherzer whose a 92. He may be a highly touted prospect and pan out to be awesome but he hasn’t proved anything yet. Using more recent minor league stats..? Do you hear yourself.. there’s a huge difference between the minors and the majors. Yeah, yeah I’d rather use 50+ year old stats from someone who’s played in the MLB over someone who’s only played in the minors to date.

I understand the uproar to a point but more cards= more lineup diversity. This has always been a problem in DD and at least they're trying to address it. And last year the TA program sucked. So I give them props for effort at the very least.

good thing the cards are free
That’s right. Nobody ever spends any money on stubs right? Of course not. They should remove the option to buy stubs since nobody uses it... right
Open your eyes kid!
Ummmm..they are talking about the prospects cards....at no point did they mention anything about anyone buying stubs.
-
the game shoudl be called MiLB The Show now..
maybe their rationale is if these cards are lower, no one's gonna use them -- so a player that has played 0 games in MLB, make them a better ranked player than MIKE TROUT!
I also can see them trying to promote them more because of the new MiLB deal they made w the game but yeah.. it's dumb overall.

Sds making madden like moves with these prospects cards. Also its like a slap in the face to players who have already proved something in the big leagues.

Considering the fact that across every sport with measurable and quantifiable data shows how athletes have improved dramatically over the last 50 years, if we took prime Mantle and dropped him in MLB today, I think we would be tremendously disappointed.
Take 1936 Jesse Owens and drop him in the 100m dash today against Bolt and he would be almost a full second slower. Owens best time is closer to the women's world record today.
We all love legends, but to deny how much athletes have advanced as well as the game has changed in 50 years is just ridiculous.
Ruth was a physical monster in his era, 6'2, 210lbs. Today he would be average size for MLB. Oh and Usain Bolt from above? He weighs 207. (Side tip: muscle is more dense than fat).
Trout has 40lbs on Mantle and Stanton has 50lbs on him.
This is without getting into the off field issues that could have easily resulted in Mantle never making the majors in today's game.
So yes, I believe it is pure fantasy to suggest a great player from 50 years ago would remain a great player today. But I would never want Prime Mantle taken out of DD because of it.

Well yeah who wouldn’t agree with that? There’s no denying things have advanced a lot since then. Your the one comparing eras. I’m not because it’s not possible. If you gave mantle everything trout has now, then who knows. If you took everything away from trout and put him back then with mantle with what mantle had, then who knows. Everyone’s diet to the way they train is 100% different from then. Completely different regimen. There’s no way you can compare those eras to now. My opinion, if you gave mantle the same regime as trout he’d be just has good. There would be no disappointment. But making a card off of minor league stats is lame. That’s a fantasy there. Just like Mantle batting in the same lineup with Trout, facing Nolan Ryan. Pure fantasy. Never happened, and never could happen.

Brother I know it’s early but you can’t have a kid that’s in Double A be rated a 96 overall higher than someone like scherzer. What has he done? He’s hasn’t even pitched in triple A or done anything near Scherzer. Yeah I’m sorry but I don’t appreciate prospect cards being rated higher than some of the games best.
