Baserunning

I hit the ball, so the button worked for that. Before I touch another button, the behavior happens. So how could this be a controller issue?
P.S. If it truly is a controller issue, I would happily buy a new controller to fix it.

It’s definitely nothing you are doing wrong. It has been happening all year for me. Seems to be two scenarios (for me): 1) on a 4-6-3 DP, the runner in first going to second stops halfway. 2). If a runner has to hesitate to see if a ball is caught (infield or outfield) they often “forget” to start running again.
I played the other day and scenario 2) “seemed” a lot better in that hesitating runners remembered to run.
4-6-3 DP scenario still happened.
I’m on an Xbox series x. Happens in Conquest and vs. CPU. I mainly play on Rookie and Vet. I let CPU control baserunning and fielding decisions.

Baserunning is a bit funky but I also recommend using analog and pointing to the base runner with your left stick and hitting the button/base you want the runner to go. You can use L/R tiggers to stop the runner no matter what the CPU tried to make him do. If you tell the runner to do something then the batter has an input it seems to kind of reset the input or command you told the base runner. So you need to make sure your left stick is pointing at him and you're telling him what base to go to or not move at all.
I absolutely agree there is some bugs and dumb interactions with baserunning however, using the analog with button method is good to ensure you're controlling the runner how YOU want to not the RNG or CPU. -

Why is this better than using the button to select the runner and using the d-pad to select the base? How would using the analog method prevent the issue that I am experiencing?

@Orcin52_PSN I've tried both and IDK how to answer that other than it just works better. It's the most effective way to control your base runners at least from my experience. It's like the differences between using timing, zone, or pinpoint with pitching and batting. Less RNG and less opportunities for the CPU to take control of your player. I would say just try it out and see if you like and it works for you.

I have used analog quite a bit, and I didn't see any difference in the ability to control the runner. It's simply a matter of preference. It feels more comfortable for me to use a button to select the runner and the d-pad to select the base. Using the stick to select a runner was not always reliable for me as I would sometimes point at the wrong spot and miss the runner entirely.
Regardless, I don't see how the use of analog would result in "less opportunities for the CPU to take control" of the baserunner. The runners are already under CPU control before the user intervenes, and you still have to gain control of the runner before he starts, stops, and reverses course. If you could do that with the stick, you could also do it with a button, and perhaps even faster with a button.

The RNG and CPU takes over in situations where you provide less input. The most noticable is batting and pitching. If you use timing or button then RNG is heavier. If you use pinpoint or analog then you'll get less RNG. I just assume that's what's happening in your case. Sorry it doesn't help. -

So you are saying you do not experience this issue with analog baserunning, but you do see it with button?

@Orcin52_PSN Yes. I won't say I don't have ANY issues BUT I absolutely feel I have more control and the runner responds better to my input using analog. I also slide like every [censored] time to first or on steals. In order to slide you HAVE to use left stick to point to the runner then use the right stick to point towards the base. I could be wrong but even in the case of buttons you must use the sticks to slide anyways. So to me, that's more fluid and I didn't like that I still had to use the sticks to slide when using Button config.
Id say play practice or casual to get a feel for analog. I can't describe in text how to use it but I can absolutely tell you once you get the feelings and input you will understand what I mean.OR better yet, invite a friend to a 1v1 and pickle game.
Let each other get on base then practice your base running and how it feels. That's what I did with my friends. I'm not good at it but I know how to do it. -

You're right about that, so that is certainly a factor favoring analog.
I will try analog again for a few games and see if it solves the issue from my original post. That's really what interests me. I want the game to stop taking away my baserunners by going back to the previous base on a ground ball through the infield.

Couldn't agree more. I hope it helps. It helped me switching. The only other thing I would make sure you're doing is using high speed and good base aggression players. I know for a fact a slow catcher will react poorly to your input as compared to someone like Corbin Carol or a speed demon on the bases. I'm sure you know that but take that into consideration.

The runner takes one step toward second base on his own and then goes back to first BEFORE it gives me control. THEN I gain control of the runner and can send him to second base, but it is too late. The real problem here is that the runner should never go back to first under any method (including auto baserunning) because he is subject to a force out.
Any other ideas to fix this situation? Does anyone else have this issue or am I the only one?

I don’t know if this will help, but I’ve stopped watching the ball and where it goes, but instead look at the diamond at the top of my screen. The one with the baserunners on it and the “button” that corresponds to the base they are on.
If I see them not moving, I hit LB to advance them all or RB to send them all back.
I’ll also press the button for particular baserunners and then D pad to advance them. That works fine for me, but I don’t always send them to the right base.
One of the main reasons I don’t play online whatsoever.

Use your triggers. I am PS5 and use my triggers to stop the runner in the middle of the play then it should give you full control again. I think I would just have to see what you're doing or what is happening

I agree you would have to see it to understand what I am doing wrong, and I appreciate all of your patient attempts to help me. I am trying to find some gameplay videos to see if it happens to others. If I do, I will link it.

Are you on PS5? Do you have the setting on your triggers where the sensitivity matters with how hard you press the trigger? I prefer a quick trigger finger so to speak so I had to turn that thing off. I use Button Classic baserunning and I've never experienced what you're experiencing so I'm not sure what the cause would be.

Thank you for this idea. Yes, I have a PS5. I will check these settings later.
Your post has also caused me to think about the way that I hold and use the controller. It is very possible that I am accidentally and unknowingly clicking the R1 button when I make contact with the ball. I sort of squeeze the controller, press the X button too hard, and even move my hands upward when I "swing". (Yes, I understand that my excessive thumb pressure and erratic hand movement is ineffective and unnecessary, but I just can't help myself. I may need an intervention.)
I will report back after I get a chance to try out this solution because it might also help others if it solves the problem.

That is so weird; never heard of this bug before. The only times it happens to me is if a liner is hit towards SS and there's a runner on 2nd; he'll dive back and at best depending on speed he'll get to 3rd when he should have scored. But runner on 1st? Don't remember seeing that. Sucks.
