    Hi all

I'm new to MLB and baseball but i like card collection games so yesterday i picked up MLB and OMG! what is this the Dark Souls of sports games !!!
Hitting the ball is crazy hard but i guess I just need to practice it (a lot) more.

But i have a question about tutorial there doesn't seem to be any in-game I found some help popups in the settings but these are pretty basic.
Am i missing some tutorial mode somewhere in the like 200 menu's or is there just no tutorial ?

I really don't have much of a clue what i'm doing so it would be nice to have some kind of tutorial for new players that goes over first of all the rules of baseball in general and second how positions are played and their controls.
And third players statistics etc. because especially the last 2 aren't explained like at all or extremely basic.

Also what the heck is a Bullpen even ?!? I open packs and sometimes get the option to add to rotation or Bullpen sometimes sell sometimes nothing.
I'm very confused by this as I don't even know what a Bullpen/rotation means.
So for now i just backed out every pack opening don't want to be adding them to something I don't understand.

Look the basic baseball rules i can get away with by YouTube videos but like for example in-game you get in quite a lot of situations. when I finally get a ball to hit (first of all it get's caught like 95% of the time) my dude runs to first base but there's already one of my players there so my dude just walks off the field, is he out what even happend ? and why is dude on first base not running second base. And there's a lot of other examples of things I really didn't get especially throwing one time you just throw other times you use the R2 marker thing it's not making a lot of sense to new players we could really use a proper tutorial.

I'd have to say though game is addicting even though i suck at it and miss like 99% of hits it's still fun 😉
Not complaining on the game I like the game, just need more support for newer players imo

Going down the baseball rabbit hole, eh? That's awesome. I did this a few years back with soccer. Went in totally blind and now I'm a bona-fide addict. I also spend an ungodly amount of time playing Football Manager which has actually eaten into my Show playing time.

I think a good place to start would be here:
    https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/baseball/baseball-for-beginners

As for tutorials, I would find them to be lacking for someone coming in fresh to not only the Show but the actual sport. BUT...if you go to settings -> Gameplay -> General -> Tutorial Tips = On. Then you should get sporadic popups at least explaining the mechanics.

I would then set the difficulty to Beginner. Then on the main menu, scroll down to "Exhibition" and just play classic mode for a few games. This should give you many of the tutorials as you play.

Full disclosure, I've been playing this game for years so I haven't used the tutorials in some time, so I really don't know how helpful they are. But figured it's a good place to start.

Lastly, highly recommend just watching real-life games when you have time. There is A LOT to baseball and it'll take time. But you should find it rewarding because it's a great sport.

And pop into this post if you have questions. I'm on here a few times a day so happy to help out where I can.

Welcome to baseball. Watching live games (if possible) is a great idea. And don’t worry about not knowing the rules…a lot of seasoned players don’t know all of them. There are guys on here that know every rule, so hopefully they’ll pop in here to answer your questions.

    Okay, rotations and bullpens.

In the video game (and with many real teams), there is a five man rotation - your starting pitchers (SP). These are the guys who are your pitchers at the beginning of the game. You have five because they get tired after pitching and have normally recovered well enough to pitch again after four days. So, you rotate through your SPs to start games (in real life. In the video game, you only need to rotate when playing another gamer online).

The bullpen is your relief pitchers (RP). in the video game (on the players cards - press up to see the backside of the card) there are only two types of relievers. RP and CP - closing pitcher). You can put them into slots in the game if you want. LRP long relief pitcher - those who have good stamina, and MRP middle relief pitcher -those who have average stamina. The SU slots are for set up relievers - those with little stamina. The CP slot is for the closing pitcher. The closer is the guy who gets you the win in tight games and will get a Save if he pitches the last three innings, or the the team is up by no more than three runs when he comes in to pitch (less than three innings).

The video game is very lenient when it comes to relievers. You can fill your entire bullpen with any combination of RPs and CPs that you wish (much like real teams). You can even start a game with an RP or CP, but don’t expect them to be very effective for too many innings. In the vs CPU mode, you can stretch a relievers start for as many innings as you wish without harming them (unlike real life). This is helpful when trying to meet a certain goal with them.

You can find the official baseball rules here: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/rules
    https://www.mlb.com/glossary

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips guy's yes i'm watching some baseball on YouTube now.

So you do have to substitute players, it makes sense now why I miss everything they were dog tired probably haha I played all nine innings with same.
Anyway i will go practice some swings and try to get some guy's on base.

So it's confirmed there's no "real" tutorial, guess i'll have to learn the hard way then by trail and error.

There are no tutorials for the rules, but there are tutorials for the video game and in-game graphics that show the controller buttons and what they do for your version.

You do not have to substitute players - but once you do, they can not come back in. Once used, they hit the showers and are done. You can move players around in defensive positions, but if they don't have the new position as a secondary, don't expect them to catch the ball all the time (unlike real life). You can not change the batting order of players. Say after a game begins you decide you want your lead-off batter (first batter) to bat 5th. You can't do that. They have to bat in the order they began the game in. You can change the batting order before the game begins though.

I ll start with the basics, you get 9 players on your team one for each base, a shortstop who plays between 2nd and 3rd,and 3 in the outfield. They play in the field defensively and also are the ones who bat for you. You get a 10th guy the DH who bats instead of the pitcher.
Pitchers - either starters or relievers.
Starters are guys with high energy bars that can throw a lot of pitches and go many innings during the game, relievers have less energy and typically only pitch an inning, they typically come in when a starter is tired or is getting hit a lot.
A closer is a reliever who pitches the last inning to finish off the win and usually is the best reliever in the team.
I would suggest looking up the definition for balls, strikes, hits, outs, extra base hits, steals, runs, innings. The mlb glossary has all of that,it would be easier to read it there.

as for your question at first, if the ball is hit in the air it can be caught for an out any base runners must stay at their base until after it's caught or they can be made out as well.thats probably why your batter got to first and the other guy was still there.
I am very knowledgeable about baseball so post any questions you may have.

Been a fan of baseball (and played) for almost 40 years; I still can't explain what a balk is. Even 1,000s of replays and readings of the rule hasn't made a dent in my comprehension of it. Every time a pitcher balks, I'm like "what am I looking at?"

Any slight movement of your pitcher with runners on base or even dropping the baseball in a real game would be considered a balk

@sbchamps17 Yes, I know the obvious ones, like a pitcher resetting or losing his balance; I mean more like "you see that slight move riiiiight there!?"

    Well, no I don't lol

If you have a head set, you can send me a message on here or a friend request on PSN (BadaBing_0) and we can run some co-op and go over some things in live gameplay.

Thanks very helpful never even noticed these are the same guy's catching and batting lol.
Yes i think i'm getting the hang of flying balls now players have to stay on base i noticed yes, also i was pushing them with L1 and they got tagged out every time.
I'm not really sure when they can run/steal safely i'm having really hard time getting guy's back onto home, 99% of time I don't get further then second base, is it normal scoring is this hard in baseball ?

I'm pretty descend in defense i think most of the time I can pretty easily strike out all their players so it's hard scoring for CPU too but because i'm not getting any players back home i often go into Conquest overtime with 0-0 all the CPU need is one lucky hit every time and they score.
Also I noticed in overtime there's always one of my players on seconds base even before starting first batt, I have a lot more chance to score in overtime then i do in normal play i feel. Is the guy on second an overtime rule or what is exactly happening here ?

Also in Conquest what is the difference in Rookie/Legend because i'm not noticing any difference I mean i have a awful hard time winning on a Rookie even, but higher difficulties don't feel harder what is actually changing?
I mean batting is hard on Rookie but doesn't feel harder on higher to me.
They catch 99.9% of the balls i do hit on Rookie as they do on All star or whatever.
They pickup the ball and tag me out before my batter can reach first base on Rookie.
So i'm not really seeing what is "easier" on Rookie ..

@Tarnished-Willem You don't really HAVE to sub players. For instance, the non-pitchers will likely play a full 9 innings. The pitchers you'd likely sub between innings 5-7 depending on their confidence and energy. Of course, if they are having a terrible game you'd hook them much earlier.
