Positional needs

When looking at trade menu it shows a ranking over every position (2nd, 18th, etc). What does this actually mean? Thought it might mean system generated priority suggestions but since Baez is short, I doubt he’s 2nd needing to replace. Plus it’s not a 1-10 order. It’s random. Then I thought it is taking your best person in each position and assigning their ranking in the league or maybe their division? But that doesn’t really seem right either. Maybe divisional...? Can someone clarify what these actually mean? They aren’t really influencing me yet and haven’t in past years but now I just want to know and can’t find it anywhere.

It doesn't mean Baez is 2nd in need of replacing, it means the shortstop position on your team is the 2nd best in the league.
The higher the number, the better that position is compared to the rest of the league

That’s what I was assuming. Then when I saw Contreras listed at 3rd, as much as I love him, it gave me pause - so I had to come ask!

Yeah, there just aren't many great catchers in the game right now. We got Yadier Molina and Buster Posey on the downslide of their careers; then you got the up-and-comers like Willson Contreras, Mitch Garver, and Christian Vasquez; you got your established vets in Yasmani Grandal, Gary Sanchez, Roberto Perez, and Salvador Perez; and of course, the one elite player in J.T. Realmuto.
Luckily, it won't be long before Adley Rutschman and Joey Bart are knocking on the door to be elite players at the catcher position. Then you got guys like Sean Murphy who could surprise in the same vein as J.T. Realmuto did.
