Before Day 1 99’s

I'm not going to take sides here as I see it from both perspectives but something that people don't consider is this. Under the old model pitching was dominant until the hitters caught up, which was after the allstar break usually(See Kershaw, Kluber, Edward Cabrera, Bobby Miller/Randy for example). A 92 pitcher will almost always be more useful than a 92 hitter depending on pitch mix, outlier etc. The hitters are on an even playing field now is all I have to say

It just kind of sucks now that live series cards, live series collection rewards, and low 90s in general are already useless. I especially don't see where they go with topps now, ASG, finest, etc. No room to grow cards already

I haven't paid for a single player card this year beyond pre order stuff. I have had some pack luck but other wise I was able to complete the RS program with a winning record so any idea that it's pay 2 win is a joke.
This game need a shot in the arm from what's been done the past 3 to 4 years and so far I think it's a good start. Until we get to season 3 it's really hard to judge on the long game but so far it's been good in my eyes.
One thing to consider is the meta data that SDS has on player base. I would not be surprised if the way the seasons are set is this is when SDS sees players wave of people coming back to the game, maybe the idea between 99s is to keep players engaged longer when they return because the cards are better.

I get your point but whats better than a 99 card? It's not like in mid-June a 99 card is going to be released that is far superior than the 99 I already have at that position. At that point it will just be a matter of what name would I rather see in the lineup and that's not enough to keep me wanting to come back.

You're right! As the explained, this way we're earning the best version of each card right away. For someone who won't play past July, they can use a 99 Trout, 99 Ohtani, 99 Lindor etc.

That's not what it is. If you think that, just wait until set 1 is no longer usable. You will have to restart the grind to get new cards. There is still an infinity grind, it is just significantly less rewarding because you just grind to go from 1 99 overall to a new one

see mate - i thought about this a LOT before doing any work on building my team - i have sold all Set cards - i am only trying to finish the NL collection and have like 2 or 3 cards left - within a few weeks of game cycle its unreal to me ! i am aiming for that Sammy Sosa card !!!!

You are going to have more than plenty set 2 cards before set 1 isn't usable though. You aren't restarting the grind. You just keep playing and get more and more cards on the way. Like I don't know for sure the the whole point seems to be that you doin't have to be constantly grinding to get more cards to the point where you can't play what modes you want to play

Also MLB The Show doesn't "push" for you to buy stubs like the other games push for you to buy their virtual currency given the fact that you earn stubs while playing... the other games sell one currency (NBA 2K - VC, Madden - Points) while you earn a completely different currency (NBA 2K - MT Points, Madden - Coins) in their games.

line up diversity will never be a thing, majority will always use the best cards to win. Its nice to have all of these other options tho.

When Set 3 rolls around, everyone is going to have a very similar lineup using Set 2 & 3, where if you kept Set 1 eligible, lineups would vary more. More 99s eligible, more lineup diversity.
Instead they are just forcing us to change our rosters instead of letting nature take its course. If everyone is saying we’ll want to quit using Set 1 players in July anyway, then why force us to?
I feel like we'll get the same players in Sets 2 & 3 and beyond, just different versions of those players so I don't foresee there being too many issues with Set 1 cards getting cycled out when the time comes.
That’s why I think this change is dumb. Why repeat player releases if we’re already at 99s? That limits lineup diversity rather than help it.
They just want you to buy a 99 Trout every 3 months rather than just once.
attributes won't be identical... for example I have Gold Rookie David Wright and Diamond Captain David Wright right now and they both have different strengths with Captain Wright having more power and speed... they both rake though... the interesting ones will be guys like Reggie Jackson who is getting a 97 Charisma today... will be interesting to see what a 99 Postseason (for example) looks like for him in say October.
Also MLB The Show doesn't "push" for you to buy stubs like the other games push for you to buy their virtual currency given the fact that you earn stubs while playing... the other games sell one currency (NBA 2K - VC, Madden - Points) while you earn a completely different currency (NBA 2K - MT Points, Madden - Coins) in their games.
I never said they’re pushing me to buy stubs. I just think you’d have more lineup diversity if all of the 99s were eligible all year instead of just forcing us to buy new 99s that are “in season.” It defeats the purpose.
Instead of repeating player releases, they should give other cards their 97+ if they really wanted to keep things fresh. Limiting us to in season cards is only going to limit lineup diversity.
I get what they tried. I just don’t think it was the best solution for what they were trying to solve.

Only thing I'm saying is they aren't forcing you to buy these cards and I interpret that as buying stubs to go into Marketplace to buy the card. We haven't even made it to Set 2 yet to really see what cards get released... I'm thinking we will get the same players because that's what we got in prior games and we already have some players that have multiple cards aside from Live Series and Flashback... now obviously the diamonds will be interesting to see what they do with those for same player but so far I feel like the cards will be different enough and plus its a way to keep you playing the game.
Plus giving players different ways to earn the different versions of the cards won't hurt either.
I don't recall how to get the WBC Trout but we could see Finest Trout get earned in a different way from that card and then earn All-Star Trout in a completely different way from those cards even if most if not all would still be available to "buy".
Ok. But how does that help lineup diversity?
line up diversity will never be a thing, majority will always use the best cards to win. It’s nice to have all of these other options tho.
That’s my point. There would be more diversity if all of these options were available all year. Restricting our inventory to in season cards only hurts that.
