While Hz (refresh rate) and FPS are related, they are not same thing. While the game may be running at 120Hz on the PS5, the max FPS is capped at 60. Someone posted last year that their X was running at 120Hz and 60fps.

Yes you are correct about FPS and Hz. But Series X has been running at up 120 fps all year, if you have the panel that supports it of course. And PS is now, as of today, showing 120 fps on my frame counter.

I actually made a video a couple weeks ago when I found the Series X was running up to 120 fps.

PS 5 now, note frame rate is fixed with no VRR.

The timing is very peculiar though, especially because they haven't officially communicated anything and because VRR is not compatible yet for the PS5. To me this feels like a situation where it was decided to "just release it so people have something else to talk about besides the game being bad, and in the meantime we will try to fix what we can and make everything compatible".

I just read a Sony article saying that you can still use vrr for unsupported titles that aren’t on the list. Just make sure your settings are on for vrr on your system, have a hdmi 2.1 and it should work if your tv/monitor can support it

It already works offline for PS5. SDS so far is not allowing it online for PS5. Xbox has been able to use it for both online and offline for a year.

So apparently 120hz has been added to PS5 for MLB TS 22. Not sure if it was added in the patch this morning but most likely was. Though Sony still hasnt rolled out VRR support for PS5. So you will probably want to hold off using 120hz output until either Sony rolls out VRR support or the game gets patched and can run 120 FPS fixed without VRR.

I would be interested to know if people with a PS5 and a 120fps compatible Monitor/TV are having any issues.

I have a PS5 and a VRR HDMI 2.1 120hz Sony 900h TV. Yes, I am having issues. Works like a dream offline, but SDS has not allowed it online. Matchmaking kicks you out unless you disable 120hz and go back to 60hz (and its associated input lag).
