I don't mind them changing the name, but my first impression of the logo and name is that it looks/sounds like a minor league team or a fictional team for a Disney channel original movie. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I think they could have done better.
-
Hey, at least there were no mean tweets today
-
That logo looks like a semi pro team. I dont like Guardians as the nickname personally, but they at least couldve come up with something better for the logo. It's like a bad Angels knockoff.
-
Now when you watch Major League there’s going to be a disclaimer before the movie that you may be offended by the outdated team name.
I think I was watching rush hour on mtv and a disclaimer popped up saying there is offensive and outdated stereotypes or something like that.
-
I used to work with a guy who grew up in Cleveland. I asked him what he thought about it, and he said, “It wouldn’t have mattered what they called it. They will always be the Indians or the Tribe to me.”
You think they’ll change the name of the Cuyahooga River next? Is that how this works? Change the name of anything that isn’t neutral? Or am I getting it wrong?
I live near Ft. Payne, Alabama. They used to keep Native Americans there before moving them along the Trail of Tears. Is no one gonna fight to rename it? We’re going to prioritize the name change of a professional baseball organization over things that pretty much represented a genocide?
-
A lot of people who probably call others snowflakes sure seem [censored] hurt by a team deciding to change their name out of respect for the people who are part of the effected group who have protested against it.
I can agree the name and logo are bad but am totally down with the change -
This isn't really cancel culture IMO. It was time. Some of those other teams have the blessing to use the name and likeness that they do. The broad term Indians isn't really appreciated by Native Americans. Its time they change it. Same with the Redskins. I realize most Americans have no real idea what our indigenous people have went through over the years and thats ok, but acting like their opinions or voices don't matter is simply racism. I think its good that Cleveland has decided to move away from that name. Its out of respect, not cancel culture.
-
Also to go with the goofy logo if they don't have wings on their helmets like Thor I will be very disappointed

Same thing for tom and Jerry. Bought my child the whole series years ago and whoopee Goldberg gave a long speech about racism and how things have changed. I love tom amd jerry.

How long till it changes in game?

Guardians refer to the Hope Memorial Bridge, not the movie. People say stupid, but if you look at names that we’ve grown accustomed to, they’re pretty bad: Cubs, Sox, Nationals, or plain inaccurate: Lakers, Jazz

The Lakers and Jazz are due to franchises relocating. They would have had new names/tweaks if it would happen today, so I agree with you there. I dont see any issue with Cubs though? I'm not sure why you think that is a bad nickname.

I can agree the name and logo are bad but am totally down with the changeMeh. Y’all like to use the term loosely. Like when you start crying that a syrup you’ve been eating for 20 years is now somehow racist because somebody dug up some random garbage and then I respond well that’s pretty stupid and youre like “wHoS tHe SnOwFlAkE nOw”. Yea, still you.

No one is offended until they are told or paid to be offended.

Might as well be the kittens or the pups

Everyone calling the name change cancel culture in this thread clearly doesn't even understand the definition of cancel culture. This isn't some TV host having to resign over making an absurd comment.
The Indians changing their name has been coming for a long, long time, just like the Redskins. This isn't a university using the name of a tribe with permission and respecting the name. It's a little different when your entire team history is built around a funny caricature of an actual group of oppressed people.
All that being said, Guardians is a terrible replacement.

I don’t see how y’all don’t understand this.

At least there’s a relation to the city’s history is what I’m saying. You can not like it, doesn’t bother me like you are bothered by Cleveland’s decision to remove the name Indians. How will your life be impacted by it?
