Baserunning frustration

Why is it seemingly impossible to simply pull up to second base for a double? My runner will very often turn around and run back towards first just before getting to the base. Or if I hold too long will just continue running to 3rd. Extremely frustrating. I don’t normally play much RTTS (happens in Moments sometimes too), so if anyone knows how to NOT do this 75% of the time, I’d appreciate some advice. Thanks.

In RTTS, possible solution/workaround for this. May only be for buttons baserunning though (which is better anyway). Hold down L2 while running and press the button corresponding to the base you want him to go to. In this case triangle.
In the HUD you will see lines along the base paths stopping at the base to which you have directed your runner.
