Good Timing hitting Broken?

Something I've noticed this year with hitting. If you got a good timing but its towards to the early side then it is without a doubt a hit but more likely a extra base hit or a home run, but yet when you having good timing but towards the late side it is just soft contact resulting in pop up or some sort of out with no hard contact. If someone could explain that be my guest or if others have noticed this too
