Covering the bag on a steal attempt

Twice now, the AI has used my shortstop to cover second base on a steal attempt. There is even a commentary to go along with it where it says, “base hit through the hole he just vacated” or something like that. The cpu engineers a perfect hit and run this way.

The problem is, with a right handed batter, it is supposed to be the second baseman covering the bag. The shortstop covers the bag when a left handed hitter is at the plate.

If you think about this for a second, it seems obvious. Why would the guy most likely to have ball hit at him leave his position to cover second base?
