What I do not understand

It's 2020. Why is the game online still such a lagfest? I can overcome the fielding nonsense, the pitching nonsense and the subpar hitting engine. But to be on 3rd base with 1 out and a runner with 70+ speed to tag up on a flyball to RF against Charlie Blackmon of all people and still get gunned at the plate, only because my runner starts running 5 seconds after I hit the button... that makes me sick to my stomach. Not to mention all of the baserunning oddities this has caused me, I get in a pickle so often and I almost never steal because of the lag in the first place. Just awful.
-
Yea any type of lag...it just bugs me. Main reason is we have these games that have PvP with 100+ people on the game and it's flawless the large majority of the time.
I don't get it...

My gut tells me that those companies invest a significant amount of money into their online infrastructure. This sometimes seems to run on P2P code from the early 2000s.

The pickle issue is because runners are basically falling down any time you tell them to go back and they round the bag past a certain point. You either get back picked it end up in a pickle.
I've also had good base stealers on preloaded steals wait till the pitcher was relating the ball before going, didn't matter if I was praying L1 or not.
That's before putting bad connections into the equation...

I know what you're saying, that's a separate issue. But I almost always round the base manually with my runner until I see what animation the opposing outfielder gets and based on that I either keep going or send him back. You know, like how you're supposed to do it. But because of the lag, they go back way too late and I get backpicked so freaking often. That's because of the lag, not because of faulty mechanics.

I’m to the point where I either full on send the runner or play it safe. The worst is when holding L1 with multiple runners on after the OF drops/misses a ball at the wall. I ended up with 3 guys on 3rd base one time.
-
Oh come on, let's not beat a dead horse. We all know the game isn't perfect. Let's just try and have fun. Its baseball after all.
-
My favorite base running issue is where you’re guy just decides to make a hard turn around a base for some odd reason and then ends up getting stuck in the mud and tagged out at whatever base he just rounded

I hear ya, but I never use L1 for baserunning in the first place. I do baserunning manually since god knows how long specifically for the reason you just mentioned. But let's say I hit square on a ball hit in the gap (send him to third initially) and just as he gets to second base, my opponent's outfielder gets a good animation, I would then just press triangle right away to make him stop at second base and take the double. But because of the lag, the game registers my input for "triangle" way too late, causing my guy to be halfway to third base before finally turning around and slipping in the process as someone else above mentioned, and bam; he's out instead of an extra base hit for an RBI opportunity.

I love when that happens to someone like Grandal who has 6 speed and no reason to think about taking the extra base. Someone like Buxton I could understand better. Heck, even Biggio with 90 speed I’d get it.

Thing is, it doesn't really matter too much who you're doing it with. As long as you know what you're doing and send them back in time, there should never be an issue.

I've gone back and watched replays when I've been back picked at first and it's because my runner went into a stumble animation similar to when you try to go back to first on a steal. When it happens again watch the replay, you'll be able to tell if it was lag or that stumble animation. You can't see your runner do it, you have to watch the replay.
Now the delayed tag ups, late steals, or waiting to head back to the bag on a fly ball are lag issues. Another issue is I've had a runner freeze on a flyball and then not move. I didn't hit a button or anything to make him stop but despite pounding R1 he waited to long and got doubled off.

I agree with you. Baseball is suppose to be fun. But, its not fun getting tagged out when the 1st baseman is near the dugout. Or the outfielder testing his juke moves to catch a fly ball. That sir, is not baseball or a baseball game. Probably wouldn't be a big deal if I was down/up by 10 runs.

Like I said, I know exactly what you mean and I'm addressing a separate issue here. I'd be okay if I'm backpicked while being overly aggressive with terrible baserunners. That's not the case here. It's 100% latency related.

Like I said, I don't really have too much issues with all the game mechanics. Sure, it could be better. But the lag has been there since forever and it doesn't get any better, ever. How is that possible for a AAA studio? I mean, we pay AAA money for this game, right? If they don't wanna invest in basic stuff like decent servers, they should just make it free to play and nobody would have the right to complain about this.

As far as I can remember they use a p2p system. Unless they changed it, it would be nice to know and maybe eventually get a better system

Yeah I think so too. Either way, we should be able to play this game lag free in this day and age.

Well, these issues have always been there. Got 4 hits and 3 extra base hits in one inning against an opponent and didn't score. Got thrown out 3 times on the bases because of the lag I simply couldn't run. I do think it is worse now because everyone in the U.S. is on the internet more causing more traffic.
You would have a much better experience if match making was done by ping.

I agree that's why I think this company is just a money grab. Even infinity Ward and Activision tweet out and talk to their customers almost on a daily basis about what's coming up and patches and issues with the game. In the past SDS has had better communication. It literally seems like they are just ignoring the entire community and the game unless they're releasing packs or something that cost money or stubs.
