Captain Hoffman

Even though his attributes are minimal at best; is he worth the 40-50K he's at right now?
I know he'll help boost any RPs in my bullpen; but I'm looking for a decent Closer. Charisma Lee Smith isn't cutting it.
I did just unlock Captain Nathan from the Twins LS Collection; so I could use him without boosting the rest of the bull pen.
I'm asking because I'm thinking of putting together a decent enough team and maybe jumping into some Ranked Seasons.

I looked at home but my bullpen has a lot of closers. So I passed on paying that much for him.

I use him. I think he’s pretty good. Once in a while I run into someone that’s really good at waiting on the change up. Worth the 50k?? Depends on what you like doing with your pen?

I’ve been surprised that card has gone up in value over the weeks, it’s one of the few captains that has.
If I had to guess, it’s probably more to do with offline players and supply/demand than anything else though. Trevor isn’t 49k+ because he’s dominant online.
His value comes from the captain boost that allows you to build a decent bullpen on the cheap with some Live Series cards, and give an extra boost to newer Diamond relievers like Soto, Kelly, and Chafin.
I’m not sure that has appeal to comp online players. But if you’re an offline guy and want to save Stubs to buy your favorite hitters and/or make more Stubs to flip, he does that.
Not saying he’s bad. In the right hands and with the Tier 3 boost, he’s tough…especially if most of your other pitchers throw heat. Then Hoffman comes in with that wicked Changeup, Cutter and Slider.
He’s kinda expensive now though…glad I recognized his value early when he was under 20k. Just looked on the app and getting him for under 50k is tough right now.
I wonder how long his value will hold. Keeping the ball down in the Zone and having excellent control seems to be important since the last update.
But as more relievers come on to the market…maybe he loses some value? Or maybe he gets MORE valuable because he makes excellent relievers like Soto, Loiasaga, Kelly, and Chafin even tougher to hit?

I do like running a bullpen with only two closers; so he would give the other 7 spots a boost. But I'm worried that as soon as I buy him they'll flood a Conquest or Program with his pack.

It’s because his boost is far better than the rest. He boosts all relievers….period. You don’t have to curate your foster. Put 7 other relievers in as is required and he max boosts. Definitely the best of those captains by a wide margin.
-
Add in diego castillo, chafin, soto, king, taylor and dibbs, could even add in kelly, not to bad

Yeah…that’s basically been my pen. Although I’ve really struggled with Diego Castillo…both his free card and the WBC.
I’ve used LS Chapman and LS Karinchak to mix it up.
Couldn’t see the value in buying that Rodgers card as he already has 125 H/9 so you don’t even get a boost to that…and he’s been expensive for awhile as one of the only solid lefty relievers that’s not a closer.

Important to note that Closers don’t get the boost, only non-closer RPs.
Which bit me in the [censored] when the season started and they made Tanner Houck a starter and AJ Minter a Closer.
-
I’m sure value will go down if they ever add that pack somewhere in the game again.
-
I’m leaving him in my pen right now just to boost the attributes of breakout Taylor Rogers and Gregory Soto. I was close to taking him out to leave 97 Diego Castillo in my pen, as he’s been really good for me. But it’s probably more important to get Rogers a bit more of a boost in a pinch. As for a decent closer, Lee Smith has actually been very good for me, but I have WBC Williams and Eric Gagne ahead of him now.

Loaisiga or whatever his last name is, he is very underrated and benefits a lot from that boost

Does Rodgers benefit much? He is already maxed out in H/9...so he only gets the K/9 boost.

Yeah, and it’s only a 5 K/9 boost at that since I only have three RPs, including Hoffman, in my pen. Even so, I like my righties far more than my lefties (excluding Wagner, he is incredible), so I’m willing to sacrifice one righty for the boost, even if it is minimal.

His captain boost is the best one out there right now. There are lots of killer RP that aren't closers. That are better than many 99 closers, imho.
-
I love using Hoffmans boost, I really hope Tyler Rogers card coming in today is a RP and not a closer. My lowest h/9 besides Dibble is 113 with Michael King.
Gregory Soto gets maxed K and H, Joe Kelly gets max hit, Hoffman boosts himself to 125/121. And I still have room for Gagne!

Does any RP even get outlier in a fastball?
Looking at them the killer Rap that aren’t closets that better than 99 closers just does not look to be the case. IMHO.

Are you serious? No outlier?
Dibble, Soto, Loaisaga, Castillo...
Really.
Plut, outlier isn't everything.

You named 1 person with an outlier fastball. And it isn’t everything but it certainly helps.

Dibble and ASG Soto both have outlier. WBC Castillo doesn't? WBC Loaisiga doesn't?
Regardless, with the buff they all have close to 125 hp9 and kp9.
