Computer pick offs

Is it just me or does the computer attempt a pickoff ONLY when u push the button to steal?? This is shady AF!!
-
Pretty much, not even a point to leading either.
My PB at getting AI pickoffs is 7.
-
this isn't true as the AI has plenty of times thrown over to 1st when my baserunners didn't take a secondary lead.
-
The CPU definitely knows when you hit the button to steal

When you’re going to steal or if Chipper Jones is on base. I don’t know why but Chipper REALLY makes the cpu worry about him stealing lol. Three throws over every time.

It’s one of the things that so obvious it just makes you laugh. I was up more than 20 once grinding the cpu and sure enough the first time you hit steal or take lead…they pitch out, step off, or throw over for the first time all game and get you lol.
And my guy is whatever version of Reggie Jackson. Gold, Diamond doesn’t matter. Sub 50 speed and steal doesn’t matter. They hold that man like their life is on the line.

It really is hilarious to me! I won't even lead off and hit that button and they still throw over.

I am playing 2020, but without knowing the speed of the runner you have on base I will note that I have observed pickoffs when a runner even with a say 70 speed combined with an over 60 steal rating will draw a throw, even with no extra step.
Another thing they will do is if you steal/attempt to steal a base with a runner on a specific count they will always throw over on that for about 5-6 games. Example. Say I have Turner on first and steal second base on an 0-1 count.
Every time someone is on base for this time frame they will throw over or pitch out on that count. If the runners is like Turner/Cobb, etc they will likely try two pick offs in a row, or one pick off followed by 2 pitch outs.
I personally feel that against the AI you need to vary when and who you go with as I notice that the AI will compensate if they simmed the attempt and you were out on the sim.
I know I am going to get railed on for saying that, but too many times I have a 99 speed runner on first, the pitcher's primary pitch is a circle change, and the catcher has a weak throwing arm, I get the great jump, and while the pitcher, catcher and middle infielder are all moving at normal speed, my 99 runner is literally running in super slow motion and is gunned by a mile despite the pitch coming in at 79 MPH.
That's why I rarely attempt a steal.

I rarely if ever attempt to steal against the cpu… In my cpu games, I usually end up sitting in the box twiddling my thumbs & waiting for the pitcher to make 5-6 straight pickoff attempts for any runner on 1st that has above 80spd & isn’t even taking an extra step or threatening to run… You can be sure though, that if I ever do attempt to steal (not counting player locked rtts), I will promptly be thrown out regardless of who is sent.

Yep. Pretty much why I never steal. The CPU always knows when you're going and every pitcher seems to have an Andy Pettite pick off move in this game.
