How do you feel about saves?
-
This question came into my mind after a rare win a few minutes ago. I was playing the show 20, and Ryu was pitching unbelievably good. had 15 or so K's, and only allowed 1 run on 3 hits heading into the 9th. I had Rivera ready in the pen, but just couldn't bring myself to relieve a pitcher who was really doing well and had the accuracy bar to max width for one inning with minimum accuracy bar.
As I have gotten older I find that saves are really not that important to me. Don't get me wrong, having solid pitchers in the pen is a must in the real world, but given how unrealistically things play on the show I sometimes don't use what would be normal strategy.
Just wondering how the forum feels.

I've never really thought that a "save" or a "hold" is a stat worthy of keeping. They usually pitch only one inning. Big deal.

If my guy is cruising he stays.
If he is laboring at all. Gonzo.Only stat is the W

And I don't even care who gets the win, if I have a rested bullpen and I sense my starter is in trouble, I'll take him out even if he's 4.2 innings in.

I follow this rule, unless I need 5,000 more pxp's with Kerry Wood. If he's in an RS game getting lit up, too bad. I will pitch until his energy and confidence are non-existent. Suck it up, Kerry!

You sound like Kerry's high school coach.

When ever I’m using my 2 best pitchers either Randy Johnson or Nolan Ryan in RS they usually always play the whole 9 innings and sometimes more if we go into OT. I usually save my Bull pen for my other 3 pitchers if thier doing bad I’ll definitely replace them.

Yeah, no reason to go away from a pitcher for a stat. Real baseball is pulling away from this too, which is a good thing.
