Cant sell cover athlete?

I picked Tattis Jr as my cover athlete, I have not locked him into any collection, dont have him in any lineup, no event run and no mini seasons lineup, it is still saying I have to unequip him to sell, anyone else running into this or have any ideas?

Only thing I can think of is BR, do you have a run going with him on the team?

I just remembered, did you go into the events menu at all. Not to set your team or anything but just to look at the rewards? If so the card will be locked in. You have to make a lineup and then forfeit the run. Then the card is sellable. This happened to me a couple of times last year.
This may not do the trick but it can be an issue.

BR isn't based off collections so even if he was in your BR lineup it wouldn't matter.

This may not do the trick but it can be an issue.99% of the time its events. Even if they didn't do anything but enter the event menu, its likely set it as a card in his lineup which as you said requires him to enter the event and remove him.

Its events as mentioned above. Most likely he is one of your better cards so it will be auto generated into events lineup. Just remove him and you will be fine. Doesnt matter if you play events or not.

Im dealing with the same issue but with 2 of my FoF choice pack players. It say they are In my lineup and need to be removed before selling. Checked all of my line ups same message.

Go into event.
Take out the players you want to sell.
Press start to enter event. Might be able to just press b/circle at this point to back out but not sure -
