I never expect this game to be drastically different, but I would like to see a couple things changed.
First I’ll start with the positives though.
Infielders diving after a ball now has a more downward angle to it. Love it. This has been needed for quite some time. It just looks better.
Batter follow throughs are much more varied, and look much better now. Updated stances are always welcomed. They look great. Expect for the typical pitchers batting stance number 1.
Pitching motions are all pretty smooth. I’m seeing less and less generic, bad motions.
I think I’m seeing a greater variation in speed and contact numbers which is welcomed.
Throwing, as it always does year to year, looks better. I think I saw a couple new animations.
The perfect throw has been expanded to other bases which is great, but I would love to see a perfect throw added for infielders. So the throw to first variations are on the user. Late releases beyond perfect would be low and even in the green would have a 1% or so chance of being an error. Something the 1B couldn’t scoop. Early, before perfect is high, 1B can’t get his foot down in time. Just a thought.
Which brings me to the frustrations.
Fielding is boring.
Even with the positives additions, it’s not enough.
Tracking a ball is so easy. Doesn’t matter who I have in the OF.
Ball into glove, especially on outfield dives is so bad.
Open and close the glove around the ball instead of it being sucked into it. I’m on PS5, this should be something that we have. And speaking of aspects to the game that should definitely be in PS5, WALL DETECTION. They had outfielders colliding with the wall in Triple Play 96, so why on earth MLB The Show 22 doesn’t have it blows my mind. This could make fielding so much more fun. You wanna run full speed into the wall trying to make a play? Fine, but you might miss it. Get there too early or late, crash into the wall and give up a triple. Adding insult to injury could be that you get hurt. I lose interest in fielding every year, because it’s so easy and predictable. Adding something like this could really help. Just add something with wall collisions outside of the canned animations. PLEASE. link text — this is just one example of hundreds of bad outfield animations and lack of wall detection.
Speaking of collisions, player collisions would be welcome too. A call the ball feature is simple, but would add a layer to fielding.
Overall, I love the game. The batter/pitcher showdown is always awesome. Hitting and throwing/pitching animations are smoother than ever, but there are some staleness issues coming through in terms of gameplay. When I bought a PS5 I expected more and I’ve gotten that with The Show, but not nearly as much of a leap as I had hoped. Madden had a bigger leap than The Show and if you’re Sony San Diego that should concern you. Madden is terrible. You never want to be behind them…

One last thing, co-op is a great idea and I’ve successfully gotten into 1 game (in about 30 attempts, people keep quitting) which was fun, until our opponent quite after we went up 2-0…

I agree completely fielding needs a skill gap like pitching and hitting. loved idea of throwing meter you mentioned and wall collisions. Also heard dives have been revamped, the fact I have played this game the last 6 years and have yet to see an opponent complete a diving catch is a problem go check mvp baseball the dive system they used was great and actually useful. The dive system currently is .02% success 99.8% fail. That's a problem.

MVP was such an excellent game. They did a lot of things well. I prefer zone hitting as I feel like I’ve earned a hit when I get one, but MVP’s hitting system was a close second. Dives do look a bit better in this years game but they’re still not great. Diving catches in real life are exciting. In The Show, most not all, but most of the time I find them boring. As is fielding in general. Fielding in real life takes a lot of skill, I play center field. If they could capture half the excitement and skill it takes to play defense id be happy. I’d settle for wall detection/collisions as a starting point. It’s mind boggling that it’s not in the game, again.

So more of the same this year?

It’s similar, like it is every year, but there are upgrades that make it feel different. I look at it this way, they refine a great game every year, and I appreciate it.
With that being said there are some legacy issues that are starting to annoy me. Mainly collision detection. It’s year 2 on PS5. How is it not in the game?!
Pinpoint pitching is fantastic. The batter/pitcher showdown is fantastic. Most of the throwing and fielding animations are fantastic. They’ve refined the throwing, pitching and swinging animations and follow throughs and they’re fantastic. But the ball into the glove, especially on outfield dives, and lack of collisions ruins the game for me at this point. Fixing those issues alone would appease my boredom with fielding for a year while they figure out how to make it more fun.
I’ll be buying the game this year, but somewhat reluctantly. They’ve done enough for me to spend $70, but just barely. If 23 is a similar minor leap forward I’ll go from annoyed to pissed, and won’t be buying the game anymore. We need more options. Exclusive rights are killing sports gaming.
