Even if EA releases a baseball game in 2024, they still need to secure the league and players rights.
Right now that is SDS who has those rights.
Doubtful MLB and the MLBPA allow two seperate companies to obtain those rights.
(Just like how Topps is losing the rights for their sports cards to Fanatics)
So that leaves two options:
-
EA out bids SDS and gets the rights therefore being the ONLY company allowed to produce a licensed product. Not only does that give EA to much power into making the game pay to play; but it also keeps SDS from making a licensed game. Thus you still have a company that has a monopoly on an MLB game.
-
EA doesn't get the player rights and still goes through making the game. But it's all generic players and teams. Where the only way to make real MLB teams and players is by editing the rosters. I don't care what you say about SDS, die hard MLB fans won't play a game that isn't licensed.
So, you're going to end up with a company, that has a proven track record of making their games 'pay to play' driving a company that doesn't have that business model out of business or a second game that is non licensed.
Either way, I still see SDS standing tall in 2024
From my understanding. SDS does NOT have EXCLUSIVE Rights with MLB. They purchased the License for X-amount of years. Any other Game Label can also purchase the License as well as long as MLB feels they are credible enough.. However NO ONE else has been willing or wanting to pay that huge cost to get them MLB Licensing & risk their game NOT being able to turn a profit upon being released. This is how & why SDS has been the ONLY MLB Baseball Sim Game for the last several years.
As well the MLB Licensing includes & covers ALL active players. It's with the retired players EA will now need to seek out individually & get the Rights from them to use their name & likeness within the game. Also with which cards. Surely it will NOT be Topps because Topps is under Contract with MLBTS. However EA can easily strike a deal with Fleer, Upper Deck or Donruss to use their cards for retired players.
Per this article starting in 2025 Topps will no longer be able to produce baseball cards with MLB team logos.
If you look at the LS cards, in the Show now, and any of the FB/Legends, minus the new kinda (Milestone, 42, Awards, etc) they are all modeled after the players respective Topps card from that year.
Ex: Griffey JR's All-Star Silver card is a picture of the exact card from that years All-Star series that was in Topps set that year's release.
The LS Bobby Dalbec is the exact picture of his Topps RC card from this year's set.
Topps will be going the rights, to produce actual MLB designated cards, to Fanatics is 2025.
Yes, they can still print baseball cards, but they would be like how Panini cards are produced. The player with a generic uniform. No logos and not mention of team name other that the city.
Now, SDS may have to do something with Fanatics to keep offset what Topps is losing, so they can keep showing logos and team name is the digital versions of the player's card for the game.
Now, in order for any video game company to produce a game, with the player's name, likeness, and team name/logo, they have to have an agreement with that sports 'governing' entity. In this case, MLB and the MLBPA, along with the players that are considered legends.
EA has that exclusive agreement with the NFL. Thus why an NFL game produced that isn't by EA, Doug Flutie Football, can only have generic teams and players.
If the MLB decides to do an exclusivity rights deal, with either SDS or EA, then they will be the only ones able to produce a game with actual MLBPA players.
So, if SDS gets these exclusive rights, which I'm assuming they are trying, you can actually tell me that you would switch to a game, made by a different company, that wouldn't have actual MLB players and teams?
Again, the ONLY way EA will ever give SDS competition bus if they (EA) can get an exclusivity contract) or they use the same business model (highly doubtful) that SDS uses and have content that is both usable and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to acquire.
I see neither of those happening.
SDS has only ever had a first party license deal with MLB. This is why they were able to make the game during the years MLB 2k was still around. Unlike EA did with the NFL which was pay for the exclusive rights, 2k only got a third party license which blocked EA, but did not affect SDS who are a first party studio under Sony.
EA can either negotiate are third party license to make their game which would not affect MLB The Show, or they can attempt to secure an exclusive license which would block MLB The Show.
I believe SDS new extension with MLB expires after 2023. They made an announcement about it last year sometime when they reached a new deal. I remember them saying it was a multi-year deal, but not specifically how long.
What I hope isn't going to happen is MLB gets greedy and takes an exclusive deal in 2024 with EA and SDS gets dropped. I don't anticipate that happening, but it is EA. I could see EA not wanting to get back into baseball games and having to compete with an established franchise in MLB The Show. 2k undeniably whooped them in basketball.
EA does have several advantages over SDS in terms of brand recognition, larger budget, bigger studio with more staffing.
This could end up being a bad thing, of which I hope is not the case. What concerns me is MLB forced SDS to go cross-platform and it's been a bit messy. I sure hope they haven't used this as a test or selling point for a studio like EA to take over.
Mind you this video is two months old, and none of this has actually been confirmed by EA at this time.
Valid points. We can all speculate but until 2024 comes around; we won't know what's actually happening.

The grass is always greener on the other side, while I doubt EA ends up actually making a baseball game, if and when they do and if it pushes SDS out through exclusive licensing, everyone will cry about how good SDS was. The hypothetical will always beat out the current because people imagine it better.

SDS, Your days are numbered. Start the count down because if you guys (the developers) does NOT improve this game to what most in here are wanting it to be. Then you will lose half & maybe even more then half of your customer base. You have 4 years to do this, because .......
EA is relaunching MVP Baseball in 2024.
For all you in here reading this. go see the video for yourselves. That is when you will see how good THIS game is. When you have EA [censored] to compare it to.

This definitely did not go the way the OP wanted it to go.
With that said until Base Wars comes back. I don't care.
I might even take a Bases Loaded remake.

Imagine putting in enough blind trust in to EA that you are willing to post this based off of a game that was made over 16 years ago by people that no longer work at EA. Oh boy

If they will be using the 2005 game as a "Template Model" to adapt it to today's current advanced software, graphics, algorithms, etc & continue from where that game left off. Then yes I do have that blind trust & faith they will put out an excellent product.

As much of a fan that I was of MVP Baseball, it was designed 16 years ago under a completely different business model. It wasn't made when micro-transactions ruled the day. There wasn't a truly bad sports game at that time.
EA doesn't make any games now that don't include micro-transactions and their patented "DDA". If EA jumps into the baseball game sector again, it won't be to co-exist with SDS and leave money on the table especially now that SDS has gone cross-platform.
If EA gets involved they are going to be trying to make a hostile take over. It's not going to be LaLaland where EA says we just want a piece of the pie let's have some friendly competition and make good baseball games.
SDS has a solid platform, but they don't have the resources IMO to fend off EA like 2k did when EA tried to jump back into basketball.
-
Yes EA will have Content for purchase & maybe even DLC's for purchase (such as maybe with certain Uniforms, Gear Packages, Staduim Create Items, etc) Most games make money off of DLC's & "In Game Currency" purchases then the actaul initial cost of the game itself. However EA is a company that is NOT stupid or ignorant. Yes they will find ways to make more money above the initial game purchase itself. SDS does the same with selling Stubs. With that being said. If EA does plan & hope to poach away MLBTS Gamers, then they can NOT & will NOT go "OVERBOARD" with DLC's. Doing so will NOT poach away MLBTS Gamers & that is what they need because MLBTS has been the ONLY Baseball Sim game of this kind for so many years since 2K ended it's run. Too many are hooked with MLBTS. There will be no market for EA at all if MLBTS Gamers are NOT poached over to their product.

I’m not sure how we can make any sort of comparison between SDS and EA. SDS is a subsidiary of Sony Interactive. EA is an independent developer that is the parent company not a subsidiary of a parent company. And EA cannot compete on a macro level with Sony.

EA isn’t a stupid or ignorant company, as evidenced by their billions of dollars. They are, however, incredibly anti-consumer almost to a comical degree. They’ll try to get people away from the Show by using heavy marketing and promotion, buying exclusive rights deals to legends that SDS doesn’t have, and of course blatantly lying about the game whenever they can. What they won’t do is go against their business model that has made them billions of dollars. They’ll find any other way to try to draw people away from the Show that isn’t messing with their tried and true formula. Thinking otherwise just makes you naive.

Sony's licensing deal with MLB is through it's first party studio SDS. It's never been an exclusive licensing deal like EA has with the NFL. That's why MLBTS was able to be made when 2k had only the 3rd party license to MLB. EA's deal with the NFL is the only one I know of that's completely exclusive so no other studio, first or third party, can make a simulation football game using the NFL licensing.
Since there isn't an exclusive deal EA could technically at any time attempt to secure a third party licensing deal with MLB. It could also attempt to get an exclusive deal with MLB. When you look at the size of both studios (SDS and EA) there is a noticeable difference between the two. SDS is much smaller and only makes one game. EA is a much larger with multiple studios that make multiple sports titles and other games.
The question for Sony would become how much money is MLBTS making them verses the cost of competing with EA in a baseball game. Sony would have bid against EA for licensing rights depending on what EA was looking for (3rd party or exclusive). If EA got a third party license Sony and SDS would now be competing with EA.
My point was I don't think EA gets back into baseball games trying to compete with MLBTS and it's longevity in baseball. If EA gets back into baseball I would think they try to get an exclusive deal with MLB, which would block SDS from making an MLB licensed simulation. To stop that Sony would be having to pay more money to secure licensing rights again with MLB. How much more would Sony be willing to spend on that for a studio they own that makes only one game is mystery.

EA, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways...
- Star Wars exclusivity deal that produced few if any good games
- Star Wars Battlefront 2 pay to win progression system
- SWBF2 lootboxes
- All the FIFA gambling allegations
- Buying several game companies and dismantling them, leaving their employees without jobs. There is a list of these on Wikipedia.
- Doing the above to Visceral games
- Forcing employees to "crunch" in order to get games done by set in stone release dates, rather than pushing dates back
- Not caring at all for the wellbeing of their employees, or employees of the studios they own
- Making Bioware employees crunch as they worked to make Dragon Age Inquisition, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Anthem. The latter two SUCKED and Bioware is more likely to suffer for it than EA is.
- Overbearing and overreaching sports exclusivity deals
- Madden has sucked in recent installments, btw
- Several decisions that have been made to the detriment of players in order to make EA loads of $$$
