Easy Being #1 When There Is NO ONE to give you any competition.
However I do wonder how well or good MLBTS would be now "IF" 2K never STOPPED releasing Baseball games every year. It's so EASY to be the #1 Baseball game when you are the ONLY Baseball Game out there.RBI & OOTP does not count. RBI is strictly Arcade & OOTP is Managing Sim only. 2K did release a very very good product during it's run. MLBTS grew on to it's acclaim it has now when 2K refused to pay the cost to renew the MLB Licensing.
Someone needs to release a Baseball game like MLBTS, 2K or EA & give the Baseball Video Game Public something else to play & see if it's better or not for them personally.
Then we will see who truly will be #1 & if it will be MLBTS or if they will finally be knocked down off their mighty throne. LMAO

I'm pretty sure Sony and MLB have an exclusive license for multiple years, though I don't think the multiple years was expanded upon in that press release, so it's anyone's guess on how long it is, we only know this is year 1 of that new contract.

I use to get 2K baseball each year they released it and didnt like it. I didnt get to try The Show back then, even though everyone said it was awesome, because I never had a PlayStation. So to get my baseball fix I played MVP 2004 modded each year. Then finally in 2014 I got a PS and started playing the Show and never looked back.
But with there being only 1 NBA game and 1 NFL game, and they are bigger, I dont think we will see MLB getting another competitor anytime soon.

When X-BOX no longer had any Baseball Game to offer is when I went & got a PS3 "ONLY" to play Baseball & "ONLY" game out was MLBTS.
"ONLY" Thing that I liked & felt that better the 2K was the content it offered, how to earn that content & as well RTTS which at the time still used sliders to level up your player how "YOU" deemed fit to. But the actual game play & mechanics I felt were so so much better with 2K then it is with MLBTS. Every year MLBTS does increase & expand it's content & how easy it is to earn that content. As well the graphics of game play has also improved. However I feel the actual mechanics of the game play itself changes way too much every year & every year they try to make the game harder & harder. That is great for those who always crave to be challenged more & more every year. But I am 1 that just likes a simpler way of playing. The game is NOT fun for me if I am easily out matched by 80% or 90% of other players who just adapt so easily to each of the advanced Hitting & Pitching modes.

EA with mvp baseball was a good series. 2k was bad.
Edit. - just seen EA might be in the works now of making another baseball game. Interesting..

SDS has a first party license with MLB. It's why they could make the Show when 2k was still doing it. SDS is a first party studio, whereas developers like 2k and EA are a third party.
2k only bought the exclusive 3rd party license from MLB to block EA in response to EA's exclusive license with the NFL. At any point in time another developer could get a 3rd party license with MLB.
In response to the OP, this applies to all sports games except NBA where 2k absolutely buried EA. Each major sport has been cornered by a developer, and we're all screwed for it.
