Why is base durability so low? I sit more games than I play and with how few training sessions you get it is impossible to get up

It's not impossible to raise, but it does go up slowly. You need to discipline yourself to put your trains into things that raise the durability attribute. There's one option which raises durability + speed, another which raises durability + clutch, and another that raises just durability. So far, my observation is that each time you get a training opportunity you will get at least one option for durability.

My furthest advanced RTTS guy in 2021 is a "sparkplug" SS. I've played him 1.8 seasons (calendar date is mid-August 2022 on his career). Every single training opportunity, I've forced myself to spend on something which raises durability. Also, as I've raised up I've upgraded the archetype from copper to silver to gold and recently to diamond. Right now, my durability is 91 of which 45 is due to archetype boosts and 46 is base. So I've raised my base from 30 to 46.

Anyway, hope this helps - stick with it man. IMO, durability is the first thing you should raise if your playing any RTTS career other than speedster. With speedster, always select the base stealing drills if available (fairly rare) and then durability is your back-up. IMO a lot of players make a mistake by raising things like CON and PWR first and then get pissed off that they are sitting so much despite leading the team in multiple statistical categories.

Thanks good to know it goes up with the archetype levels. I just got the progression to start tracking finally so I restarted my RTTS and was very concerned that you start with such low durability. I was sitting like 3 of the 6 games series. I'll definitely be raising it every chance I get
