Can't Hit With Mantle
-
Give it some time. When I first got him, I was struggling as well and was down around 200 (play mostly RS on HoF and legend). I’m now up to 330 or so and he’s easily one of my best hitters. Just took a little time getting used to him.

Mantle has a very slow swing, so you need to cheat on high heat. Sit high and react to low offspeed. He crushes the low offspead stuff.
-
I struggled a lot with him at first too but now he is one of my best hitters. With him I try to lay off inside stuff and look for hard stuff away or react to slow breaking pitches down. He absolutely murders Those pitches for me

Thanks for the replies everyone! Going to take all that advice into account and give The Mick another shot. Like I said, I’m really reluctant to take him out bc I’ve seen what he can do against me just need to unlock that for myself now.

I'm gonna say something totally opposite; if you don't like a guy or don't perform well with him, just go with someone else and don't tell yourself to keep giving him try after try just because he was that expensive to acquire or because his attributes across the board look so great.
At the end of the day, you not performing well with him will become a thing you're mentally aware of everytime he's up to the plate. It's much smarter to go with a guy you're more confident with, even though the attributes might not be as great.
As an example, Mike Piazza is by far the best hitting catcher in the game. On paper. In reality, I can't hit with him if my life would depend on it, while others do fine with him. His swing is just so slow it seems. So I could go on and on and keep trying to get it going. But I'd much rather play Posada behind the dish who is far worse when you look at the attributes, but his swing is quick and smooth and I absolutely demolish the baseball with him. So when he's up, I'm feeling good and confident instead of having to worry about his slow swing like I do with Piazza. That decision making will win me games down the line.

I agree. I hit .155 with Mantle and ..370 with Cobb.

Thanks for the input. Definitely won’t stick with him just because of cost. Tbh, I really enjoyed doing the collections for Mantle and Trout (after starting with DD in late July) so it was worth it for me even if the cards don’t perform. What keeps Mantle in my lineup really is that I know what he can do even if I haven’t quite figured out how to get him to do it yet. I just keep running him out there hoping something clicks, but I also realize it may never click.
I think your point about it being a mental thing is a good one. I’ll probably take a little time off with Mantle and try coming back to him. In the meantime, I want to give Cobb and Yelich a shot in the OF. I love LS Yelich’s swing and so far Cobb has been a beast for me offline. One of them may even unseat Ellsbury who is one of those cards I just hit well with even though there’re better options out there.

Be patient. He's so good!

last year i was hitting .200 with Rogers Hornsby after first 200abs
i ended up finishing about .350 and being one of my best HR hitters
stick with it, the form will come

Don't worry about it. You will be fine.
I mean you could be me and be hitting .179 online, which means I suck with everybody.
Not sure why I even play. -

couldn't agree more. I get so convinced I 'have' to have an all 99 lineup, but more often than not this involves using guys I can't get good at bats from. 97 Jesse Winker has been a revelation in left field for me and knocks 99 Minoso to the bench. Likewise I'd take 97/98 Bellinger at 1B over 99 Ortiz.

This is exactly why I do not lock in that many stubs for one player. I have no idea if I will hit well with him or not and I'm not locking in over a million stubs to find out.

I can definitely understand that view point. For me, doing the collections was more fun in and of itself than pretty much anything else I've done in the game, so it's worth it even if I don't hit with the player. For what it's worth, I kind of had a feeling I wouldn't hit with Mantle or Trout because I wasn't great with their other cards, but the collections were enjoyable for me (and I have hit pretty well with Trout).
