POTM Selections...

Good Evening SDS,
I have been enjoying your video game very much this year. The content has been top notch and has definetly helped ease the pain that 2020 has brought all of us.
While I love your Lightening Card selection of Fernando Tatis Jr., I am however scratching my head over the other POTM cards and your lack of New York Mets. Yes, the Mets are certainly the brunt end of many of baseball jokes and memes, but let us not dis-credit the stellar August that Michael Conforto, Dominic Smith, and Jacob deGrom all had. I was certainly disappointed that not a single one of them earned not even a Topps Now card at the very least. I saw your nods to Nido and Rosario, but we the people do not want Tomas Nido cards. We want players with [censored], grit, guts, and who are actually good at baseball.
I trust your judgment will be corrected in September, and look forward to the final month of this unprecedented baseball season. In the meantime I will accrue my Devil Ray innings, get a few hits with Winkler, and grind for the beautiful Tatis card you blessed us with. Let's just drop some gems next month.
Thanks again,
Disappointed Mets Fan -

I do think there is some logic to the choices. Tatis was the player of the month, so he gets the top card despite having two diamonds already. The other guys (Lewis, Lowe, Karinchak, Hernandez, Winker, I’m forgetting one) don’t have diamond cards, thus their selection. Guys like Soto, Trout, deGrom, all have had great months but already have good cards, so they choose others. Conforto already has a diamond.
Now, the one that throws it off is Voit. But maybe it’s because he just recently went diamond.
You look at the top guys in August and most of them have diamonds already (either LS, FOTF, awards or Topps Now). Some others they could have picked for MA were Dom Smith, yes, Kyle Tucker, Rhys Hoskins, Jeimer Candelario, Hosmer, Belt, Sano, Zach Davies, Marco Gonzalez, Zac Gallen.
It’s not that egregious that they didn’t have any Mets and plenty of teams can make the same argument you’re making.

You forgot Fried, who had one of the best months for a pitcher in all of baseball heck you can make an argument that no player had a better month regardless of position just based on WAR (nearly 3 war month).

Fried was a player of the month.
-
The Mets just laid a beat down on the Blue Jays with Smith crushing a grand slam so I would suspect a Topps now on the way from that game.
2 points to consider for their Topps Now and POTM picks
-
Topps Now is based on the real life cards that Topps creates for Topps Now so if Topps doesn't make a cards it's out of SDS hands
-
POTM is selected based on players who had months that exceeded what is expected of them and their ratings. So for example Degrome had a great month but his performance is not unexpected. Brandon Lowe in August was gang busters and played to a level he never has or expected so he gets a POTM because its above his norm.
If the Mets keep up their recent successes then a Mets POTM is likely

I would agree on deGrom performing as expected but Dom Smith and Conforto definitely played above their stats and average numbers.
Conforto is usually streaky and will kill the ball for a while then bat .200 for a while. This year he has been consistently hitting all year and has improved on his contact and power numbers against lefties.
Dom Smith has also been consistent all year and almost leads the league in doubles. His first call up to the majors was a disappointment because he was out of shape and didn't seem motivated then last year he showed flashes and this year is continuing to improve. On top of a topps now/player of the month at the very least his LS card should be a gold.

Right, it was Fried. My point still stands. His other card is a gold and this is his first diamond.
