I have mixed feelings about defensive shifts, infield and outfield. They're effective when they work, but it's costly if it fails and the batter beats the shift somehow. That has happened to me while playing against the CPU (and I've beaten the extreme left shift as Griffey Jr many times, for example), and I've been a victim of it as well, since I have the defensive shift set to "Auto".

Understanding the mechanics of defensive shifts is not my strong suit. I'm a fan of a team that doesn't shift a whole lot (lifelong Tigers fan here), so I'm not sure what to think about shifts.

So what are your preferences on using (or not using) defensive shifts?

I let the cpu auto shift for me. I'll change it if a guy is late on everything though.

Love them when they work. In all seriousness tho I usally play a 3rd base covers drag and leave the outfeild as is on those pull hitters with speed

its a problem with the extreme shifts most players will try to exploit nobody covering 3rd base line. regardless of speed it usually works until you go in and change shift

One of the first settings I change when I get the game each year is the auto shift. Online, you are almost giving bases away on late hits.

So, if you choose to turn off auto shift, does it affect things like double-play depth, guarding the lines late game, etc? These work pretty well and I deal with the pull shifts because of it as I don't want to remember to switch to DP depth every single time, and I've only had the shift get exploited online successfully once in a while (I also generally pitch into it). But if it only affects the shift against pull hitters, I'd gladly turn it off.
