Runner freezes running to first....

Has anyone seen it where you hit a ball to the outfield and the running freezes halfway between the plate and first? I hit the ball in the gap and the runner just froze. Couldn't do anything to make him move. My opponent seemed stunned on what to do and eventually ran to first to get me out because even the game didnt know to cover first in that situation. First time this has happened to me...just wonder if other have seen it.
