I would be batting .450 or higher. That's not even an exaggeration. I absolutely hate the fact that the auto-shift is turned on by default. Using a shift, or not, is a strategic decision and should be user controlled at all times.
If you lack the presence of mind to put on a shift in a specific situation, or if you're simply too lazy to do the defensive adjustments, I feel like you should be burned by those balls through the infield holes every single time. But now, the game bails you out by putting an auto-shift on basically 80% of the players in the game, making those well hit pulled balls into the shift ot lasers up the middle automatic outs. Those are great at bats with great swings being outs while my opponent did absolutely nothing for it. Another fine example of lowering the skill gap.

I have no problems with the shift in general. If you put on a shift on me MANUALLY 27 times and all my 27 outs will be balls hit into the shift, you won't hear me say a word. I might actually give you credit for doing so. The fact that it's turned on by default for everyone is just not right. Don't get me wrong, I can swing late and get cheesy late swing doubles against the shift. I just don't enjoy doing that, because it goes against the principles of having good at bats. The only good at bat when going oppo against the shift is when the ball is pitched to the outer side of the plate. Other than that a good at bat is having good timing or pulling a ball slightly early on the inside part of the plate, not pushing a ball the other way with an intentional late swing.

I'd be fine with removal of auto-shift by default if there was a giant red popup that noted X card as being a pull hitter.
Right now I believe you'd have to check the quirks of each batter and likely multiple times/game because people would forget who was and wasn't. I'm definitely not down for that nonsense.

I slightly disagree with that.. a good at bat is when you hit a double against the shift with an intentional late swing to beat the shift

I disagree with you. That's the same thing as saying I had a good at bat on a late jammed blooper for an RBI over the 3B head. Just because you got a result doesn't mean you had a good at bat.

That's exactly what a good AB is. Doing the opposite of what the opposing team is attempting to prevent or guard against. Choking up on a 2 strike count, fouling off a few balls and then hitting a hit (Kirk Gibson ring a bell). I thought Gallo bunting a base hit against the shift as being an AWESOME AB. The chess match between him and Snell that game was great. We all talk about those things as being great AB's in real life.
Maybe they dont translate into a video game but I dont see any difference to your version of a good AB and some of my examples above.

I turned the shift off a couple days after launch because people kept swinging late & having great success putting it right where the shift wasn’t. The only time I change it is if someone is a bunter.

The reason why it's not a good at bat is simple:
This game is about muscle memory and repetition. Having good timing on pitches, especially in the higher tiers, separates the good players from the average players. It's a craft. Sometimes you can do everything right during your at bat and it will still be an out. Like a lineout, flyout, or hitting into a shift. You did not get a result, but you did have a good at bat. Having good at bats consistently will eventually reward you one way or another.Anything else, swinging late/jammed or early/pulled off are just bad at bats no matter how you put it. You might get rewarded every now and then, but if this is someone's approach in this game I guarantee you'll be stuck on a certain level forever.
Bunting against the shift I can live with. That's a heads up play. Make the guy pay for having the shift on.
Either way, the narrative of this thread is being changed. I just wanted to point out that auto shift is a problem and I wish everyone would have to manage it manually. How you beat the shift, I don't really care. I'll have my approach and you'll have yours.

Agreed. They do plenty to lessen the gap and you already know how. This is just one of the more glaring details that user doesn't have full control in this game. By full control not only referring to input but as you pointed out, strategic decisions made on the field.
This hand holding should honestly not be there in ranked.

Same, I turned it off too. If I notice my opponent tends to swing early a lot, I'll put on a shift manually when necessary.

Great post OP. I would be hitting close to 400 with rizzo if that was the case. I hit a hard liner to the gap where the shift is conveniently placed most of the time lol. I would love the added strategy factor

You can actually do it at the beginning of the game for every batter in the line up, or choose to do it on the go. And I really don't mind, those adjustments just take a couple of seconds. Reality is most people don't even know how to set everything properly because the auto-shift does everything for them and they've been relying on the game to do it for them for years.

A couple seconds 27 times or more could add like 20 minutes to a game
