Just to clear up confusion here, currently, non-two-way players can have a secondary, but it's not available from the start unless you're a two-way player.

Totally understand the frustration. All I can say at this point is that the team is looking into it. I'm sorry, I know that's not a satisfactory answer, but it's the only one I have at the moment.

EDIT: I'm told we have a fix in the works, but a potential workaround you could try is to either edit your main squad and load in, or not edit until you’ve started the Mini Season.

For sure. I'm aware OP might not be the only one experiencing the issue, just addressing his individual case, that's all.

Talked to the team about this and my understanding is that if you would need to keep that Xbox account linked in order to continue that progress. If you were to link a new PS5 (assuming you don't already have one linked), you would be able to continue that progress.
There's also the issue of what's causing your account to crash out.
Linking issues can get confusing. I'd recommend reaching out to support if you haven't yet and seeing if they can offer any insights.

EDIT: Here's something you can try that has been known to resolve this issue in some cases:
Clear Local Saved Data: Go to your Xbox dashboard, select the game, go to "Manage Game and Add-ons," then delete the "Reserved Space" and saved data (choose to delete from console, not cloud).
