    Spousal appreciation post
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

My wife is hilarious. I only play The Show when she’s busy so she encourages me and says she’ll be busy for an hour or so, so it’s a good time to play if I want.

I’ll mention to her that there’s a stream I’ve got to watch later to get some Twitch packs and like clockwork she’ll remind me later to watch my stream so I can get my “sticker packs” lol.

My wife has my back relentlessly, so when I blow a showdown she agrees that the computer clearly cheated me. If I causally mention that I’m going to play for a bit she’ll say okay but don’t $&*+ the bed this time. She’s definitely not above chirping me.

My wife is honestly just the best. She’s my best friend, my ultimate teammate, and the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And she’s a friggin knockout too. If there’s going to be a wife appreciation thread, my wife definitely deserves a shoutout.

Cheers to all the partners out there that put up with us 🥂

  • Blackout Market
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

All blackouts should be lifted for the 2020 season. They’ve always claimed blackouts help attendance since it entices locals to attend the game rather than watch it on tv. There’s ZERO attendance at any games this season. What’s the advantage of blacking anyone out?

All the time and money they spend trying to increase the fan base and they can’t figure out that maybe putting the games in front of as many eyeballs as possibly is a good start?!

  • Topps Now Tyler Alexander
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

Tyler Alexander’s LS series card is a 51 overall common, but his relief performance yesterday was record breaking.

    For anyone that missed it, he pitched 3.0 innings and struck out all 9 batters he faced on just 39 pitches;

    • Struck out Mike Moustakas on a foul tip
    • Struck out Eugenio Suárez on three pitches, all looking
    • Struck out Jesse Winker on three pitches, all swinging
    • Struck out Nick Senzel swinging
    • Struck out Josh VanMeter on three pitches, the last called
    • Struck out Freddy Galvis swinging on a 3-2 breaking ball
    • Struck out Tucker Barnhart on a called third strike
    • Struck out Shogo Akiyama on a called third strike
    • Struck out Castellanos swinging on a 2-2 curveball

What kind of attributes should we expect on his Topps Now card? Max k/9 is a given but what will be his overall?

(Also, his LS series card will surely be bumped to bronze but I’d imagine it’s too late to invest at this point)

  • Pitch tunneling
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

To take it a step further, the same release point/arm angle allows the balls trajectory to appear the same for the first X feet of travel.

With different release points/arm angles, it’s easier for the hitter to determine the type of pitch sooner in time and from a further distance.

With pitch tunnelling, two pitches may appear to be the same for the first 30 feet of travel. Now the hitter has half the distance and significantly less time to identify the pitch type, speed, and break.

  • WAR MOST OVERRATED FORMULA IN BASEBALL
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

Bottom line is that WAR is imperfect and flawed (OP’s point), but is currently the best available stand alone stat we have to compare players across different eras (other commenters points).

In 2019, Justin Verlander was 21-6 with a 2.58 ERA and 300k. His pitching was worth 7.4bWAR. In 2019, Mike Minor was 14-10 with a 3.59 ERA and 200k. His pitching was worth 7.8bWAR.

In 2019, Gerrit Cole was 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 326k. His pitching was worth 6.6bWAR. In 2019, Lance Lynn was 16-11 with a 3.67 ERA and 246k. His pitching was worth 7.5bWAR.

In this case, WAR is misleading. Despite having lower bWAR totals, Verlander and Cole had better seasons. Accordingly, Verlander and Cole finished 1st and 2nd in Cy Young voting while Lynn and Minor finished 5th and 8th.

bWAR includes park adjustments, so playing in Globe Life increased the bWAR totals of Lynn and Minor and without a deeper dive could lead someone that lives and dies by WAR to believe that Lynn and Minor were better than Verlander and Cole last season. Which to OP’s point, would be a ridiculous conclusion.

Having said that, more often than not, WAR (bWAR or fWAR) is going to be the best all-incompassing stand alone indicator of performance. The best players will consistently post the highest WAR totals.

In baseball, almost everything is recorded, quantified, and analyzed. With all the information that’s available, why would anyone choose just one stat to look at when comparing players? Even if that stat is comprised/calculated using other stats, it’s impossible to paint the entire picture and honestly, that person is just missing out on the incredible and fascinating information that’s out there.

I apologize to anyone who stuck with me and read all this. Believe it or not, I tried to keep it short. There’s just so much information out there that people are missing out on, and because of it, there’s seasons and careers that get tragically overlooked.

  • Keep Walker or sell to complete LS Collection
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

Collecting Belli and Arenado will net you 1,500 stubs each for the team collections, 4,000 stubs and Gwynn for the NL West collection, 10,000 stubs and Sheff for the NL collection, and 20,000 stubs and Mantle for the live series collection.

So if you sell and complete the collection, you’ll gain Diamond Piazza, Diamond Ottavino, Diamond Gwynn, Diamond Sheffield, and Diamond Mantle, plus 37,000 stubs which would put you close to halfway toward repurchasing Walker anyway. Could be wrong about the stub totals but I’d look into it if I were you.

  • LeBron James.......
  • ilvmyjeep_PSNI ilvmyjeep_PSN

Of all the inner circle GOAT candidates in basketball, LeBron is undoubtedly the one with the most haters. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to hate on LeBron. Think he’s the GOAT or don’t. Just appreciate what he’s accomplished in his career on and off the court. It’s absolutely commendable.

It’s ridiculous to hold someone’s strive to be the greatest of all time against them. Every single athlete strives to be the best and every single one would love to be considered the greatest to EVER do it. Jordan wanted to be the best. Kobe as well. Kareem, Wilt, and Russell too. What professional athlete would aspire to be the 2nd best?

Every athlete wants to win championships upon championships. But it’s a team sport. Measuring an individual’s career by championships in a team sport is futile. Paul O’Neill won more championships than Barry Bonds, Ted Williams, and Ty Cobb combined. Robert Horry won more championships than Jordan. Henri Richard won more Stanley Cups than Gretzky, Lemieux, and Howe combined.

You can think LeBron is the goat, think it’s MJ, or Magic, Wilt, Kareem, Kobe, etc. But what you can’t possibly do is take anything away from what LeBron has accomplished in his career.

As much as I hate his guys, statistically speaking, the answer is Barry Bonds, both as a Pirate and a Giant.

Ignoring Bonds, I would say Ken Griffey Jr., but by the time he got to Cincinnati, he was a shell of his former self. I may have to go with Tony Gwynn, at least in the early 90s he was still great. Saw Glavine and Smoltz, but never got to see Maddux or the big unit live.

Best game I went to, well most memorable, I was at the brawl between the Reds and Cardinals, where Molina and Phillips had words at the plate right in the bottom of the first, Cueto kicked LaRue I believe. Quite a nasty site as bad as anything I have ever seen at a hockey game.

Shoot. I forgot about Barry. I sat in the right field seats on opening day at dodger stadium one year and the guy must have hit the ball a good 20 rows behind me. It was unbelievable.

Such a shame. As much as I dislike him, Barry was great before ever touching a needle. The talent was unquestionable. But the jealousy bug got him, he just couldn’t stand seeing players he considered inferior surpassing him (McGwire). That season where he hit .370 and a ton of home runs was amazing, not for the counting stats but because he walked almost every at bat, rarely swung, but when he did it was “perfect/perfect”. That isn’t just roids.

    .370 46 hr 110 rbi. 47 strikeouts. 198 BB!!!

He just made the perfect villain though, especially if you’re a dodger fan. He was incredibly good, he didn’t hesitate to tell you how good he was, he was a cheater, he broke several sacred records, and did I mention that he was really good. The crazy thing is I believe he could’ve have done all of it without the steroids. Unfortunately we’ll never know. But it was still amazing to see what the guy could do on a baseball field.

The thing with Barry though is that he’s just as much a victim as he is a villain. Barry Bonds was Mike Trout before anyone even looked at WAR. He was a victim of being under appreciated and his talent was evaluated differently in the era he played. Counting stats were what got the attention. If Bonds had been evaluated then in the way we view Trout now, the narrative around him would be different and perhaps he never would’ve sought the attention he craved because his greatness would’ve been appreciated and recognized at the time.

He may not have been the most likeable personality, but his prickly relationship with the media also stemmed from his frustrations in his lack of recognition as the best player in the game. In 1996, Barry put up a 40/40 season worth 9.7 WAR and finished 5th in the NL MVP vote. Two years later, Sammy Sosa won the NL MVP with 66hrs and a 6.5 WAR. That same season, Mark McGwire hit 70hrs and posted a 7.5 WAR, finishing 2nd in NL MVP voting. Barry Bonds that season? His 37hrs were barely half as many as McGwire’s. Barry finished 8th in NL MVP voting despite posting an NL best 8.1 WAR for position players. They were different times and different metrics were used to measure these guys.

I’m not a live or die by WAR kind of guy, but it’s so easy to see how under appreciated he was in his time, and easy to see how it could motivate him to do what he thought was necessary to receive the recognition he thought he deserved.

Play the Rockies and use your #3 starter to line up with Freeland. Jackie hits left-handers pretty well. I’ve finished the triples and only need a couple more doubles and I haven’t hit the 42 innings yet.

The way I see it, the Hall of Fame is not only to honour the great players and their accomplishments, but also to chronicle the history of the game. There are numerous artifacts throughout the Hall that detail that history and Pete Rose’s history within the game should be a part of that.

The Hall doesn’t need to just celebrate the good things Rose contributed. The whole story should be told, including the allegations, investigation, suspension and ban. It is undeniably a huge part of baseball history and it’s ridiculous to not have the entire story commemorated in the Hall.

Despite the ban of 8 players, the Black Sox history is included in an exhibit with artifacts and records consisting primarily of American League President Ban Johnson’s correspondence but also include trial documents and exhibits, player interviews and depositions, the reports of private investigators hired by the League, and photocopies of period newspaper accounts of the scandal. Pete Rose’s career should be detailed in the same manner.

Pete Rose broke the cardinal rule of baseball and thus pays the price for that infraction. The history of the game, the Hall of Fame, and the fans for that matter, shouldn’t be deprived, however. There’s no reason to honour Pete Rose with the same fanfare and celebration as normal inductees receive, but his story should 100% be on display throughout the Hall.

@Scarletgospel said in completely off topic but...:

Yes, as should other guys like Bonds. The hall will forever be incomplete without the games all time hits leader and home run hitter.

And for those that say Bonds shouldn't get in, there are quite a number of juicers, drug takers and alcoholics in the hall.

Hall of Fame inductance is decided by the BBWAA (Baseball Writer’s Association of America). MVP voting is also conducted by the BBWAA.

In 2003, Barry Bonds testified in front of grand jury regarding his involvement with BALCO and PED usage. The BBWAA was aware of this as they wrote extensively about the situation and investigated it thoroughly.

In 2004, Barry Bonds was voted NL MVP.......by the BBWAA......with a 91% vote share.

In summation, the BBWAA knew in 2003 that Barry Bonds was a PED user, with that knowledge in mind, determined he was the MVP in 2004, and then decided to punish him a few years later when determining if he should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The BBWAA celebrated and rewarded Bonds fully knowing that he was a PED user, but then acted outraged and disgusted about it a few years later. The hypocrisy of the BBWAA is unfathomable and the fact Bonds isn’t in the Hall is ridiculous.

Cheating in baseball has been around since the first inning ever played. The history of doping is a long one and there are plenty of Hall of Famers already attached to amphetamine use, or whatever advantages were available at the time. The fact remains that the advantages available to Barry Bonds were better than those available to players 30 years prior, and his skill level was so high that his enhanced performance was unlike anything we’d ever seen.

As with Rose, put Bonds in. Tell the whole story. It’s fascinating. People act as if it’s a stain on the Hall to include these players and their stories. Ignoring history in an establishment designed to celebrate and preserve history is ridiculous. It’s especially ridiculous when you consider that it’s the writers that are leaving Bond out. They certainly wrote about him and celebrated him an awful lot that it seems unfathomable that they don’t think his history warrants inclusion.

Did Rose ever bet against his own team? If not, then I see no reason to keep him out. Betting against yourself clearly provides a motive to intentionally do worse, and there should be consequences for that. Betting on your own team only provides more motivation to do what you go out to do every game: Win. Betting on games you aren't involved in is perfectly fine

Betting on games you aren’t involved is not perfectly fine when the league has specifically said ANY gambling on games will result in a lifetime ban — period.

Steve Stone (White Sox announcer) had a great point about this: if Pete bet on his team 4 nights in a row, what message does that send his bookie when he doesn’t bet on the 5th night? The manager is going to have inside info (i.e. the closer has a tummy ache, the DH has a strained bicep, the Star outfielder is going to get a rest day, etc etc), and that kind of garbage needs to stay far, far away from unsavory gambling types. Further, if you look way way way back in baseball history (watch the Ken Burns doc), the sport has a long, disturbing early history with gambling and fixing games. It’s best to keep players and managers as far, far away from gambling and bookies (and potentially organized crime) as humanly possible.

I understand where the MLB was coming from with that policy, but I don't really agree with it. And I understand why Pete is facing the consequences for it still. He broke the rules that were set. I just disagree with the rule itself. The way I see it, as long as you aren't betting against yourself, and no one else is in on it (which may be difficult), you're fine

As for Steve Stone's comment, I can definitely see how that could effect bookmaking odds, but does that effect the integrity of the game? I don't really see how it does

Betting on a game that you can influence can’t be allowed in any way whatsoever. Stone’s comments relate to the message it sends to bookies, but they’re still relevant.

While it may seem inconsequential to bet in your team’s favour, that’s completely incorrect. When you have the power to influence the decisions made within the game, you can use that power for your own interests.

As @SchnauzerFace mentioned, if Rose knows the closer has a tummy ache or the DH has a strained bicep, his decisions can be influenced by his personal stake in the game. The reasons he could choose not to place a bet are the same reasons he could manipulate the lineup for personal gain. He can start a player that needs rest or push a player to play through injury because it’s more important to win a game on which he’s placed a bet. Rather than making decisions for the long term success of the team, he can make in game decisions to win a game at greater costs to the team/players. Betting on his team can lead to damaging decisions to preserve his interests outside of the game.

Up to this point, we’ve only been focusing on game outcomes. What about prop bets? Suppose Rose placed a prop bet for the starting pitcher to strikeout 8 batters. Is it not more likely for Rose to keep the starter in until he’s reached Rose’s goal, perhaps to the player’s detriment? Betting in any form cannot be tolerated.

The rule is no betting. For/against your team is of no consequence. No betting. Period. He bet.

Best individual performances I’ve seen were Roger Clemens striking out 18 Astros while with the Jays (absolutely dominant), and A-rod, who I was incredibly excited to see for the first time, going 4-5 with 3hrs and 7rbi with Seattle in a rout of the Jays (final score was like 19-7 I think).

Best game? Without a doubt, game 5 of the ALDS in 2015, aka the bat flip game. That was the most exhilarating and emotional game to which I’ve ever been. The highs and lows were unlike anything I’ve experienced at a baseball game. 50,000 people screaming, shocked, raging, cheering, crying, celebrating, and hugging complete strangers......and that was just the 7th inning.
